Representation is so important in the media, especially for children who are looking to their favorite movies and shows to reflect their own experiences back at them. It’s important that all kinds of kids can see their own lives in the media they consume, whether it’s their race, their gender, their passions, and even their sexuality.
Disney has recently been making strides when it comes to LGBT+ representation in its media.
In Onward a character was confirmed to be a woman with a girlfriend, making her the first openly LGBT+ character in Disney’s animated history , and in Beauty And The Beast ‘s live action remake, the character Gaston has what was referred to as “an openly gay moment” .
‘The Owl House’ just made Disney history for itself.
The show’s lead character, Luz, was just confirmed by the show’s creator to be Disney’s first bisexual lead character after an episode containing Luz dancing with another girl, Amity, at the show’s version of a prom, after having previously shown interest in boys.
The creator of the show took to Twitter to share how excited she was about the historical moment.
“In dev I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard haha. When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could NOT represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel,” wrote show creator Dana Terrace on Twitter .
“I’m bi! I want to write a bi character, d****t! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership,” she continued.
“Representation matters! Always fight to make what YOU want to see! As OH continues I can’t wait to explore things that are important to me and my crew. Looking forward to the next chapter,” she finished .
What an awesome move for Disney!
