Family can be a tough world to navigate. On one hand, you’ll do anything for the people you love. But on the other hand, you don’t want to feel like they’re trying to rip you off.
One Reddit user by the name of F54tughi556 asked other users if she was in the wrong for returning her husband’s birthday gift in order to pay for his cake. The cake which was, by the way, made by her daughter (and his stepdaughter). The Reddit crowd had a lot to say about this story.
The User Tells Her Story, Asking Others To Weigh In on It

It All Sounds Pretty Strange to Me

The long and short of it is that OP’s daughter makes baked goods for others and expects payment from them, even if they’re family. When her husband refused to pay for his own birthday cake, OP stepped in and paid by selling the watch she’d bought him as a present.
Of course, OP’s husband wasn’t happy about this and told the whole family about it, but OP doesn’t seem to think she’s done anything wrong. On the other hand, her husband believes that allowing the daughter to expect the family to pay her for things like this will teach her the wrong kinds of lessons.
The Other Users Pretty Overwhelmingly Sided Against OP

For many, it seemed like OP was being needlessly cruel when she decided to return the gift she’d purchased for her husband just to pay her daughter for his cake. It’s also worth noting that OP stated she kept the rest of the money, which implies that the husband never got a new gift.
In Fact, OP Should’ve Paid for the Cake To Begin With

As plenty of other users pointed out, it’s odd for anyone to expect the person who’s celebrating their birthday to pay for their own cake, especially when made by a close relative. If the daughter wanted payment for it so badly, she could’ve just asked her mom to begin with.
There Were Many, Though, Who Saw the Blame on All Sides

While it makes sense for the husband to be upset, some people took issue with how he put her on blast with the whole family. At the end of the day, though, most people agree that it didn’t seem fair for OP to turn around and sell the husband’s gift like that.
