It’s always best to detect potential health issues way before they start taking a toll on your body, especially if they are the serious type. However, it is often also hard to notice them and many people don’t have the time to get regular checkups at the doctor’s.
But there’s an easy at home test you can do that could detect a serious health issue.
It’s always important to talk to doctors
Medical issues could sometimes come up unexpectedly and regardless of any at home test results, you should always speak to a doctor.
So if you ever feel like you’ve spotted any signs of a potential health issue, it is always important to seek medical advice.
Some signs are well-known
There are a few signs that are well-known among many to be ones of potential health issues, and most people look out for them in their everyday lives.
Some of these are signs such as sudden pains in specific areas, change in appetite, lumps or changes in your skin.
There are also subtle signs
While most of the well-known signs are noticeable ones, there are more subtle health signs that could go unnoticed if you are unaware of them.
And it is always good to be able to tell if something is not quite right with your body.
There’s a test you can do at home
There is a simple finger test you can do at home to detect serious health issues.
The test is called the Schamroth Window test and it relates to the way the tips of your fingers look as it detects finger clubbing.
Clubbed fingers are often bulged
Clubbed fingers refers to the ways in which the tips of your fingers may bulge and become discolored and often warm, with your nails also curving down, becoming the shape of an upside-down spoon.
Dr. Ahmed, @dra_says on TikTok, shared how you could perform the test for clubbed fingers.
Clubbed fingers are a sign of lung or heart issues
The bulged and discolored fingers could be a sign of serious lung or heart problems, and if you notice you have them, speak to a professional as soon as you can.
In his video, Dr. Ahmed said, “You can all do this one test at home to see if you’ve got any serious heart or lung problems.”
He explained the condition in the video
Showing pictures of what clubbed fingers look like, Dr. Ahmed said, “With clubbed fingers, you get a very round, bulb-like fingertip. They can be very white and the base of the nails can be very shiny.”
“The exact pathophysiology of a cause of finger clubbing is not fully known, however, the consensus at the moment is generally that it is down to some sort of chronically low oxygen levels,” he explained.
The doctor shared the significance of the sign
“Clubbing is something we assess for very carefully on a physical examination. But it can have some serious causes. One of the causes is lung cancer… bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis or a lung abscess,” Dr. Ahmed said as he shared different lung and heart conditions that clubbed fingers could alert for.
How to conduct the test
To perform the Schamroth Window test, bring together the fingertips of your two index fingers so that both nails are facing each other and touching.
You face them together in the same way you would if you were doing a heart sign with your hands.
There should be a window
When you do this, there should be a small window at the base of the fingernails so that the nailbeds are not fully touching all the way.
Dr. Ahmed ended his video by advising, “If you think you’ve got finger clubbing, especially if it’s new, you must get it checked out.”
