A 25-year-old African-American man dating a 23-year-old Caucasian lady visited his girlfriend’s family for Thanksgiving and encountered her racist grandfather. According to him, he met his girlfriend through her brother, his close friend, and they’ve been good since.
However, he admitted that the rest of the family is problematic, especially the grandfather, who is openly racist. The older man typically takes jabs at his race, and he responds calmly to “kill him with kindness,” which further infuriates him.
At the end of the dinner, the biased family accosted him for being “patronizing,” although his girlfriend and friend had no problem with how he handled the situation. The family told him to have reacted a bit for the older man’s pleasure which he found ridiculous (and is!)

The Redditor explained that handling the older man came easy to him due to his job as a retail worker. It’s the sad reality of minority groups in predominantly white countries and a shame on people who still choose prejudice instead of humanity.
Several Redditors shared their experiences while cheering the young man’s decision to remain calm. Someone said the family most likely wanted him to react so they could be heroes when they called out their patriarch. Another person said the older man purposely broke the young man and his girlfriend’s relationship.
One person added that the family is also racist to accommodate the grandfather’s behavior and, worse, asking the young man to tolerate it. They even had the guts to chastise him for not playing along.
It’s good for him that he’s still dating his girlfriend, but unless they plan to avoid the family, that’s not a healthy situation to continue.
