While Ariana Grande is better known for her powerhouse vocals, glammed-up makeup, and high ponytail, she’s taken a more toned-down approach for her latest Vogue photoshoot.
But fans seem to have a bit of a problem with it…
Nine times out of 10, you can find Ariana Grande looking a little something like this:
Completely dolled up — winged eyeliner — always , and her signature high ponytail that looks like it must weigh at least 10 pounds.
She’s also the queen of rocking baggy sweaters and t-shirts.
But never without her sleek ponytail and a pair of latex, thigh-high platform, high-heeled boots.
As her stylist Law Roach once said, “Ariana Grande is absolutely iconic.”
Roach told Page Six that “[her] ponytail is iconic. The A-line skirts are iconic. The over-the-knee boots are iconic.”
So, when fans saw her on the front cover of Vogue looking noticeably different, it raised a few questions.
People were claiming she is unrecognizable.
In her interview with Vogue, she explains that the glam version of her we usually see is merely a character she is playing.
“I like having my funny character that I play,” she said .
“That feels like this exaggerated version of myself.”
“It protects me,” she explained.
But nonetheless, people have been dragging her for “looking like a black woman” in her latest photos.
“Y’all really letting this pass?”
The cover photo features Ari wearing a giant sunhat, and black dress — looking beachier and more natural than usual.
You can even spot her natural looking winglets of hair framing her face.
And of course her dog, Toulouse, made the front cover as well.
“thanks for allowing me to be in the background of toulouse’s first Vogue cover,” Ari wrote in her caption.
“Noooo, sorry this is not ok. Ari does not look like this at all,” one fan commented.
“All I see is plastic surgery,” and, “I didn’t recognize her!” wrote another — accusing Ariana of being far from natural-looking.
“Why tf does she look like a woman of color tho? Chill with the tanning Ari,” someone else chimed in.
“This is horrible. Absolutely horrible,” another fan wrote . “How are you out here profiting off of looking like a black woman while real black women are struggling? SMH”.
“Are you black??” someone questioned. “Africana Grande?”
“Vogue is disgusting to do this, Ariana is not black.”
“Wow this doesn’t look like her,” someone noted. “There’s something weird.”
“Is she black now?!” asked another fan. “So we lighten Black celebrities and darken White celebrities. Ok”.
Ari was dragged by several fans asking why her skin looks darker and darker with every passing year.
Ariana being called out for darkening her skin is of course, nothing new.
Fans thought Ari looked different in her “Thank U, Next” video, too.
“Ariana Grande is starting look more & more… bronzed…” this fan wrote.
People have been comparing this picture of Ariana Grande from the 2016 American Music Awards to an older pic of Ari from her Nickelodeon days.
“ariana grande needs to stop trying look like a brown girl/latinx,” this user wrote.
Fortunately for Ari, there were plenty of fans that argued she is Italian and Italians can easily have a tan complexion — especially in the summer.
This is true!
“The fact that so many of you are crying “blackface” on this is really laughable,” someone said. “She’s just tan, people! Get over it.”
“The comments about her skin color are ridiculous. I am Italian and I get tan after the beach and I am lighter in the winter…” one fan mentioned .
“Why is everything an issue these days? she looks beautiful,” wrote one fan.
“She looks like a young woman who has been through a lot in her life and she has grown from it.. no black no white just Ari and her cute little pup!,” they continued .
“She looks just like the Italian that she is! A normal, natural, unmade up girl.”
“Y’all fr need to chill when saying that she’s ‘black’ or had ‘plastic surgery’ all this hate is unnecessary. Having dark skin doesn’t automatically make you a certain race,” someone else commented .
“You guys do realize she’s Italian right?!?,” someone asked in an attempt to make the haters realize she isn’t necessarily “white”.
“Lol y’all literally care too much about someone being tan. let her live. being extremely white looks unhealthy.”
Ari did British Vogue a year ago and looked pretty similar if you ask me.
A few more freckles but that’s the biggest difference.
Ari has yet to comment on the accusations.
Let us know what you think of her latest Vogue cover photo .
Is she going overboard with the spray-tan, or are fans overreacting?
