Armani’s fashion house announced the designer’s death on Thursday, September 4, confirming that he has ‘passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.’
The press release further shared that Armani ‘worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.’
His family and employees spoke about him
The designer’s employees and family said in a statement, “In this company, we have always felt like part of a family.”
“Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication.”
They spoke about his legacy
The statement went on, “But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”
He had been missing events
The designer’s death comes after he had been missing some key events for the fashion house.
Back in June, AP reported that he missed the menswear show during Milan Fashion Week for the first time in 50 years. He was recovering from an ‘undisclosed condition’ at the time, per the outlet.
Armani built a fashion empire
Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy. He built a fashion empire over the years, which includes the couture line Armani Privé, the ready-to-wear line Emporio Armani and the street line Armani Exchange.
He didn’t actually plan on it
Armani hadn’t initially planned on being in fashion, but instead studied medicine at university for three years until he left to serve the required two years of military service.
He worked for another designer for a while
Armani then got a job as a window dresser at a department store in Milan after finishing his military service, and moved up at work until he started working for designer Nino Cerruti in the mid-’60s.
Armani started his own label in the ‘70s
He decided to start his own fashion house in 1975, which he shared with business and romantic partner Sergio Galeotti. Armani found success in the job, becoming known for the way he reconstructed and reinvented men’s suits.
He eventually brought his designs to America. Now, his signature styles are beloved all over the globe.
