There is nothing worse than seeing a notification pop up on your social media saying you’ve been tagged in a pic. We’ve all had the panicked experience of scrambling to find the recently posted pic to see if it’s something you wouldn’t mind other people seeing, or if you need to enter witness relocation.
As it turns out, celebrities are just like us!
Before we get into the ~nitty gritty~ of this story, let’s do a quick refresh on who the two celebs we’re talking about are.
The first is Rachel Bilson. Best known for her role as Summer Roberts in the 2000’s series The O.C. , the 39-year-old has been basking in the nostalgia glory we’re all living in in 2021.
Up next is fellow actor Rami Malek.
Rami’s most recent and notable performance was as Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury in the Oscar-nominated biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody,
Rami is notoriously very private, while Rachel? Not so much.
These differences sparked discourse a few years back when Rachel posted a throwback photo of the pair in 2019 from their days at Notre Dame High School together in Sherman Oaks, California.
Now, the actress is opening up about the exchange with her longtime friend in a new episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert.
“I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway.”
“We were super-nerdy, just the dorkiest picture of both of us,” she recalled of the 2019 post, as per Vanity Fair .
“But I throw it up ’cause it’s funny, and I think it’s so important to be able to make fun of yourself, and he had like a gold chain, and I’m like, ‘Rami where’d you get the gold chain?’ Whatever.”
“So I’m just being funny, we were good friends,” she continued.
However, the early aughts queen quickly realized she might not be as good of friends as she previously thought after she received a private message from Rami asking her to remove the pic ASAP.
Are y’all cringing yet? Because I am!
Describing the message, she said: “It wasn’t like, ‘Hey! How are you?’ It was straight to, ‘I would really appreciate if you take that down. I’m a really private person.”
“I was like, ‘Oh, [expletive]! OK.’”
“I get really hot and start sweating,” she explained.
“I’m all nervous, like, ‘Oh God! What did I do?’ He was a good friend, it’s a funny picture…you know? I don’t take myself that seriously.”
After deleting the pic, Rachel sent a sweet reply saying that she hoped he would win the best actor Oscar he was nominated for at the time, but she never heard back.
It is unclear if the pair have spoken since the incident.
The reactions to Rachel’s story has been mixed online.
Some people have defending Rami’s boundaries, while others believe he was being unreasonable.
“EVERYONE looks dorky AF in high school. She assumed because she was fine with it, he should be,” tweeted one fan.
“rachel bilson said she respects rami malek’s privacy but at the same time being a [expletive] about him being private about his life on podcast as if it’s the single worst thing that ever happened to her.. ” tweeted one fan.
“[expletive] not all of us are open about their life,” they concluded .
