The highly-anticipated Harry Potter TV series that will hit screens in 2026 sparked new updates as HBO gave input on what to expect when it comes down to casting.
Rumor has it that John Lithgow, the Dexter, Conclave, and Interstellar superstar, was sealing the deal on portraying Professor Albus Dumbledore in the series. HBO is playing with fans’ hearts as they await all the details about the series.
HBO released a statement
HBO released a statement to Deadline, saying: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
The network shared other details, though
Yes, HBO didn’t confirm who will carry the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon’s legacies, but they dropped some pivotal details for every anticipating fan.
For instance, the series was created by Francesca Gardiner and she will be the showrunner. The show is set to run for over a decade.
They also revealed who will be the director
The director and executive producer of the show will be Mark Mylod. Mylod was also behind the 2022 psychological thriller The Menu, which shows how serious HBO is about perfecting the Harry Potter adaptation.
The book fans can be rest assured
HBO is approaching the series from a new angle where, unlike the movie, the producers promised that the series would be a “faithful adaptation” of J. K. Rowling’s novels in a 2023 press release.
Will the beloved trio be in the series?
There has been debate about whether Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, and Ralph Fiennes will make an appearance on the show or not.
Radcliffe didn’t keep the fans’ hopes up as their reunion may be unlikely.
HBO has another point of view
The Tony Award winner told E! News in May: “I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break. And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it. I’m very happy to just watch along with everyone else.”
Radcliffe was coy
When the 35-year-old was asked about what he would do if HBO opened the door for him, he said: “I’m gonna be a politician about this and not deal in hypotheticals.” This means that the door might not be closed for him, after all.
Radcliffe is focused on theater now
Radcliffe is more focused on his career in theater now, earning himself a Tony Award for his role in the Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along.
Additionally, he is also focused on being a parent to his first child with his partner, Erin Darke.
Rowling is in support of HBO’s moves
“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me. I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” said the series author in a statement on April 12.
HBO and Max Content CEO and chairman seconded that

“Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys in a statement.
