If you’ve ever had a beloved family pet, it’s hard to imagine the possibility that such a loving, devoted creature could ever be without a home. But unfortunately, that’s the sad reality at thousands of animal shelters across the country. Fortunately, doggos in Nebraska are finding homes — with a little help from the local police.
It’s a joint partnership.
The Nebraska Humane Society is teaming up with the La Vista Police Department , a force representing the city of La Vista in eastern Nebraska, for the K9 For a Day initiative.. Their goal? Finding homes for local shelter dogs.
What’s the best way to find homes for these mutts?
The best way to show the community just what great pets these dogs can be is pretty much a no-brainer: get them out in the community so locals can meet them.
These dogs are going on ride-alongs.
Police are responsible for patrolling an area, so it just makes sense to let one of these dogs tag along for the ride. That way, they can meet potential owners everywhere they stop.
Mickey was part of a pilot project.
This bull terrier mix was the first dog to be taken for a ride-along by the La Vista Police Department. Judging from the pics and videos, Mickey was a big hit.
This accomplishes a few things.
Most importantly, it might help these dogs find a home. But it’s also fun for the police officers, along with providing these dogs with a diversion from their life in an animal shelter.
After Mickey, the program was expanded.
Mickey was totally adopted, by the way. Next on the list was Stella, another friendly dog from a local shelter. Like Mickey, Stella represented the Humane Society and the local police well, making tons of friends.
It’s a great way to check in with the community.
You might see police patrolling your neighborhood. You might wave or nod, but there’s no real reason to interact further. But add an adorable shelter dog to the mix, and things change.
The dogs are a big hit for local schoolkids.
Again, everyone remembers police officers giving school presentations. These presentations, though well-intentioned, tend to be boring. But if there are dogs to interact with, things suddenly become more memorable for the kids.
Why not swing through the drive-thru?
You’re trying to find homes for these dogs, so why not take them through the drive-thru? The server who hands you your coffee might be a perfect match for this dog.
It’s such a great idea.
Patrolling officers typically have a spare seat or two in their car. The Humane Society always needs kind people to adopt pets in need. Why not roll programs like this out everywhere?
It’s a big perk.
The police officers are the ones responsible for introducing these mutts to prospective owners. But adding a canine companion to their rounds for the day must make work a little more fun.
There are *always* pets in need of a home.
Cats and dogs reproduce like nobody’s business, and both breeds are survivors. This means that, no matter how many are adopted, there will always be more who need a loving home.
The shelter is a great place to find a pet.
You might not find many purebreds there, but shelters are typically more than willing to help you out. For a low (or non-existant!) price, you can get a pet, get them spayed and immunized, and take them home.
They’re great companions.
Whether it’s your beloved pet or just a random dog you meet somewhere along the way, a quick snuggle with a friendly pet can go a long way to helping you feel better.
Police everywhere should do this!
