There is so much going on in the world right now and with 24-hour news and social media you’d think we’d be more informed.
But somehow it often seems to be the opposite. News comes faster, but that also means that stories that take longer to tell get lost in the latest celebrity gossip or presidential tweet storm.
This seems particularly true about natural disasters.
We know when they happen. Often, we see the same incredible footage over and over for a few days and then it disappears. We’re moved to donate and then we move on.
But the people affected by the disaster can’t move on. Their lives have been changed for good.
The cycle seems to have been particularly short for the flooding in Nebraska.
While the rest of the country seems to have moved on, the flooding is unlikely to end anytime soon, since there is still a whole lot of snow left to melt.
Any way to keep their plight from being forgotten entirely is a good thing.
So perhaps that’s why the story about two guys finding a fridge full of ice-cold beer has struck such a nerve.

Friends Kyle Simpson and Gayland Stouffer had spent the entire day cleaning up mud and debris from Simpson’s land and were trudging home when Stouffer spotted what looked like a refrigerator lying in the muck.
And it was full of ice-cold cans of beer.
They cracked a couple and shared the story. Since Nebraska is a small state, it didn’t take long for the owner to be found.

Brian Healy recognized it from the photos as the fridge from their family cabin. The ratio of Bud Light and Busch Light even matched the family preferences.
Sadly, the cabin near Linwood didn’t survive, torn apart of falling debris or ice chunks. The fridge traveled almost four miles before stopping in Simpson’s field.
The fridge had previously survived a house fire in 2007, so it’s a hardy appliance.

Once travel becomes easier, Simpson plans to return it to Healy.
Is it a silly story in the scheme of things? Sure, but it’s a bright spot in a tough situation and that’s important too.
