FIFA World Cup 2022 kicked off on today, November 20th, 2022 in Qatar. While fans from across the globe are excited to watch the event and support their favorite players and their countries, there’s still something that continues to be a debate!
So, what is it called – soccer or football?
David Beckham And Peyton Manning Reignite The Debate
In a recent advert by Frito-lay, David Beckham and Peyton Manning share the screen to ask – is it football or soccer?
As it’s known, football is two different sports in Great Britain and America. On the other hand, what the British call football, Americans refer to the same game as soccer. Thus, behind the debate of what it’s rightfully called.
More often than not, one argues that it should be Football since it’s a game where the players kick a ball around using their feet.
On the other hand, American football uses hands to run with the ball and a kick to start the game. Therefore, logically, the Great Britain term ‘football’ for the sport makes more sense. Nevertheless, that’s not going to stop the debate and no one quite backs down.
But, if there’s something that unites them, it’s the FIFA World Cup where players aren’t representing their clubs, but their countries.
The Football Player And The Quarterback Debate About Other Common Terms
In the advert, David Beckham and Peyton Manning debate about other common items that are known by different names in Britain and America.
For example, while Manning refers to Lays as chips, Beckham calls it crisps.
Manning refers to the game shoes as cleats while Beckham refers to them as boots.
In the video, Beckham decides to take it to the fans and let them make a decision. Now, the fans gave their verdict in the comment section of the video.
While it’s known as ‘soccer’ in America, it’s football for the rest of the world.
However, this verdict can change at any time!
