Celebrity chef Curtis Stone previously came under fire after it was reported that he had been underpaying his former nanny. He’s now speaking out in defense of himself, denying all allegations made against him.
A Breach Of Employment Laws?

In February 2023, news of Stone’s alleged breach of employment laws made its way online, leading some to question why such a high-profile celebrity chef would act that way.
The Story Starts In 2019

According to the court records, the Curtis and his wife, Lindsay, welcomed Melissa Talley into their fold in 2019 as a nanny for their two children, 11-year-old Hudson and 8-year-old Emerson. The family lived in a sprawling $11.5 million mansion in Brentwood, located in Los Angeles.
A List Of Daily Duties
Melissa didn’t live with them, but she did perform daily services for the family.
Her list of duties included cooking for the Stones’ two sons, driving the two Stone boys to their classes and various activities, reading them books, and bathing them. She would also do “small household chores” here and there.
An Annual Salary Of $65,000
The Stones paid her 65,000 USD (94,000 AUD) per year. This is almost double the average annual salary of a nanny in California, who gets paid an average of around $17 per hour.
Underpaid And Overworked?
However, Talley has since csme forward and claimed that her salary is less than what it should be and that the Stones failed to provide additional payment for her extra services.
Working More Than 9 Hours
For one, she claimed that she typically worked more than nine hours a day, but the Stones never paid her for overtime. According to California law, nannies are only required to work nine hours per day, and any extra time should be paid 1.5x the regular hourly rate.
A $1000 Check

Additionally, she said that when she told Curtis about this, he tried to get her to sign a check for $1,000, which she didn’t want to sign.
Alleged Harassment

Later on, they had another meeting, and he terminated their contract, leaving her with no health insurance or other benefits.
He also tried to get her to sign another document, which she didn’t even have the chance to review because he apparently “harassed” her to sign it on the spot.
“Fearful Of Her Own Safety”

Melissa says she felt “fearful of her own safety,” so she ended up signing it just to get it over with.
Was She Harassed?

According to the official court documents, “Ms. Talley left the office and sat down in the hallway to compose herself and review the document outside of Stone’s presence.
However, Stone apparently followed Ms. Talley immediately and continued to pressure her into signing the document while hovering over her.”
Leaving Her “Humiliated”

The whole incident apparently left Melissa Talley in “humiliation, emotional distress, and mental and physical pain and anguish.”
A Jury Trial

She’s demanding a jury trial and wants the Stones to pay her for all the overtime she worked, with interest included, as well as damages, including missed wages and earnings. Additionally, she requests that the Stones bear the legal costs of this case.
Stone Speaks Out

In response to these allegations, Stone has taken a stand, pledging to fight these claims in court.
His Defense

Stone’s attorneys strongly denied Melissa Talley’s claims in court documents filed last November 2022, providing 15 separate defenses to prove the allegations are unsubstantiated.
No Acknowledgment
It’s interesting to note that court officials attempted to serve Stone with the summons three times prior to his spouse accepting them on his behalf in their luxurious home. The court server waited in a car outside the home, even honking once, to no avail.
“Just And Proper Exercise”

Stone’s attorneys have strongly argued that all decisions concerning Melissa Talley’s employment were a “just and proper exercise of management discretion.”
Denying The Allegations

Additionally, Stone claims that she made no efforts to minimize her losses. He asserts that Melissa acted too late to initiate legal proceedings.
He also denies the fact that she endured any harm while employed under him and claims he exercised reasonableness and sincerity in response to her demands.
More To Come In May

More will be revealed in May, which is when the next case management conference is scheduled.
Chef Stone’s Net Worth

Curtis Stone is worth an estimated $36 million. Aside from their Brentwood home, he also owns a $9 million ranch located in Malibu. He’s the owner of three upscale restaurants in Los Angeles, Maude, Gwen, and Georgie, as well as an ambassador for the Australian supermarket brand, Coles.
