Marvel star Simu Liu has slammed Hollywood for the lack of Asian representation in the industry.
He wrote about it online
In a post made on Threads earlier this week, the 36-year-old actor wrote, “Put some Asians in literally anything right now.”
“The amount of backslide in our representation onscreen is f**king appalling,” he added.
Liu said studios might not want to cast Asians
“Studios think we’re “risky”,” Liu added as he went on to name multiple Asian-led movies like Minari, Crazy Rich Asians, Past Lives, Farewell, Everything Everywhere All At Once, as well as his own Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
All the ones he mentioned worked out well
“Every single one a financial success,” Liu went on about the movies.
“No Asian actor has ever lost a studio even close to 100 million dollars but a white dude will lose 200 million TWICE and roll right into the next tentpole lead.”
He called out the system
“We’re fighting a deeply prejudiced system,” the Barbie star continued. “And most days it SUCKS.”
Liu’s post was in response to a post from another user who wrote, “Hollywood, put more Asian men in romantic lead roles.”
The post featured a few quotes
The user’s post showed a few screenshots of other Asian actors’ statements about not getting equal opportunities in the industry.
Manny Jacinto, The Good Place star, was quoted in one of the screenshots saying he’s only being offered ‘dad roles’ after starring in Freakier Friday.
Daniel Dae Kim has also spoken about it
Lost alum Daniel Dae Kim was also saying that there’s still room for improvement from Hollywood in Asian representation.
He was quoted saying, “I still haven’t played a romantic lead and I’ve been doing this for 30 years.”
Others have voiced their concerns
In another screenshot featured within the post, American Pie star John Cho said that he rarely gets offers to play a romcom lead.
The producer of Worth the Wait is also quoted saying, “They gave me a list of white guys we could cast. If we could give one of the roles to them, we could get funded.”
