If you think every celebrity watches the shows they’re in — Ellen Pompeo wants you to think again. After 18 seasons, the Grey’s Anatomy star apparently isn’t the show’s biggest fan, or even close. In fact, she doesn’t have much interest in watching any of the episodes that have aired. After only seeing a handful, she’s had enough. For some fans, this may be a tough pill to swallow. Pompeo has no shame over her lack of interest in the episodes, but still has love for the show.
She doesn’t watch medical shows.
It’s a usual assumption that actors accept roles that they’re actually interested in, but in actuality, Pomeo almost turned her role as Dr. Meredith Grey down. Simply put, she doesn’t like medical shows very much.
Her husband stopped watching, too.
Considering there are 18 long seasons, Pompeo’s husband, Chris Ivery, decided to stop watching after seeing his wife in some romantic scenarios on the show. It was “awkward” for him, and for them to watch it together. However, Ivery still maintains that he’s her biggest fan.
Pompeo would rather cherish memories.
On her podcast Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo , she explained , “My intention is always to keep the spirit of the early days,” she said, “That’s really the hard work, is to try to keep that sort of DNA, which is hard but gives us a goal at least to strive for.” She uses her memories of the show help keep the tone of the show alive, rather than binging reruns.
She only watches an episode if she’s directing.
Pompeo makes the occasional exception to her no-watch rule if she’s preparing to direct an episode. She uses the episode as a studying tool to sharpen her skills and be prepared for anything that may arise when she’s leading an episode.
She’s forgotten some of the storylines.
Even though she’s been filming the show for years, Pompeo has gotten a little fuzzy on the details of some of the episodes. Without revisiting the OG reruns, it’s unlikely that she’ll ever remember which juicy life-saving medical procedures were needed back then.
Pompeo has a lot of catching up to do.
An interview with Insider revealed that Pompeo has only seen about six or seven episodes out of 392 episodes. So, even if she suddenly decided to catch-up, it would be quite the marathoning indeed.
She’s found ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ footage on TikTok.

Pompeo discovered the audio from a season 2 scene was being use in popular TikTok videos when her 12-year-old came across them. People play out the sequence when Pompeo’s character, Meredith, is begging her boyfriend, Derek, to “pick me, choose, love me” instead of his wife. To say the least, it was a little awkward for Pompeo to discuss that scandalous part of the show with her kid.
The show has been renewed for another season.
After Pompeo confirmed that she’d return as Meredith Gray for another season, ABC renewed the popular series for season 19. Looks like there will be more episodes for Pompeo to happily not watch.
Some fans think that Pompeo needs a break.
People are both amused and terrified to realize that Pompeo could have actually completed medical school in the time she’s been on the show. Fans have been reacting over Twitter to the many “eternities” that the star has, and will continue to be, on Grey Anatomy.
Others think she’s ready to cash in forever.
While fans seem to agree that Pompeo must be more than a little exhausted, they also see it as an actor having steady work and money for many years. People teach at the same school for 20 years, and that seems normal, why not with a show? We say Pompeo has one powerful lifeline, whether she ever watches a single episode of season 19 or not.
