LeBron James announced recently that he’s producing a documentary about the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. The post-mortem Grammy Award-winner lost his life to gun violence three years ago at 33. His death rocked the black Hip-Hop community, and years after, they’re not over it.
James seeks to preserve Hussle’s legacy with this upcoming documentary that’ll explore parts of his life unknown to the world, including his philanthropy. The L.A. Lakers player teams up with Maverick Carter, who’ll co-produce under his SpringHill Co. banner and Hussle’s Marathon Films.

Documenting The Life Of The Late Nipsey Hussle
James reckons Legends never die, so he’ll include unseen footage, including interviews with Hussle’s peers like Snoop Dogg and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The basketballer emphasized Hussle’s need to give back to the community as he reminisced on the rapper’s life before death.
He said the rapper influenced him and many others in the black community to “inspire, empower and uplift” other people, so producing this documentary is James’ way of heeding the advice.
Already, fans are eager for its release as James’ announcement post already has over ten thousand likes on Twitter.
Gone Too Soon
For James’ Co-producer, Carter, it’s about more than music as he promises the documentary will capture Hussle’s life from childhood to the end. He said the late rapper reminded people who made it out of the slums never to forget their origins. Those tenets inspired Hussle to go into philanthropy and repay the community that made him.
Hussle died of gunshot wounds in March 2019 after some men from his neighborhood shot him ten times and kicked him in the head. According to investigations, it was a malicious attack, and the culprits received their sentencing this year.
The Lives He Touched
Hussle’s altruism touched everyone he interacted with directly and indirectly, including former President Barack Obama. The ex-president praised him for contributing to the progress of his community, Crenshaw.
His partner of seven years, Lauren London, and their children (one biological, one son from London’s previous relationship with Lil Wayne, and one daughter from Hussle’s previous relationship) survived him.
Following his death, London became reclusive and only recently came back outside. She’s acted in two movies since then and is opening up more once again, but she’s not ready to get into another relationship.
Documentaries, Documentaries, And More Documentaries
James is one of many people to document the life and times of the Crenshaw rapper. Several networks and publications told Hussle’s story in several ways, from the True Crime special, Crime & Hip Hop on Fox Soul, May 17 this year to The Last Lap last March, The REAL Nipsey Hussle Story this March, and The Marathon Cultivation Documentary in May.
Ava DuVernay has a Hussle documentary coming to Netflix, like Nick Cannon , who’s releasing Hussle’s unfinished documentary with Dr. Sebi. James and his co-producer, Carter, have big shoes to fill but considering they have exclusive footage of the late rapper, fans would tune in to watch their show. There’s no release date yet.
