Nicole Scherzinger throws shade at the Pussycat Dolls in 'Freedom'

Nicole Scherzinger's new song Freedom throws shade at the Pussycat Dolls, with whom she previously worked.

Scherzinger debuted the song during her headlining performance at Sydney WorldPride in Australia on March 4.

In the song's lyrics, Scherzinger introduces herself by singing, "Please allow me to introduce myself / I'm not that little doll you knew / She paid her dues / Now she owns herself."

The lyrics of Freedom imply that Scherzinger is ready to move on from the Pussycat Dolls, singing, "I've got a new attitude down inside of me / I've got a new pair of shoes / Step aside, please / I'm through working for you / Was killing me to compromise / Bitch, I just woke up redefined."

Despite seemingly indicating that she is done with the Pussycat Dolls, Scherzinger still performed the band's hits, including Don't Cha and When I Grow Up, during her concert in Australia.

The Pussycat Dolls were formed in 2003, including Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt, Jessica Sutta, and Melody Thornton.

After splitting in 2010, the group briefly reunited in November 2019 and released the single React in February 2020.

The group had planned to record a new album and go on tour, but the COVID-19 pandemic and internal issues derailed their plans.

In September 2021, the group's founder, Robin Antin, sued Scherzinger for breach of contract, claiming that the singer had refused to participate in a reunion tour unless she was paid more than her bandmates and given creative control of their shows.

In January 2022, Scherzinger posted on social media that the tour had been canceled altogether, much to the surprise of at least two of her fellow Pussycat Dolls. Later that month, Scherzinger filed a response to Antin's suit, which she called "a meritless effort to enforce an expired 2019 agreement."

After Scherzinger's announcement, Bachar and Sutta released a joint statement expressing their disappointment: "We want to say how incredibly disappointed we are to learn of an announcement made on Instagram that the Pussycat Dolls reunion tour is canceled. As of now, there has been no official notification of that."

A source tells Page Six exclusively that Scherzinger's new solo career continues from here. The song Freedom is expected to be released later this year.

Scherzinger performed Freedom during her headlining performance at Sydney WorldPride in Australia, where she also expressed her hope of making the LGBTQIA+ community "very proud" with the new song.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph's Confidential, Scherzinger said, "I don't think it's going to be a gay pop anthem; I know it will be."
