It's hard to deny that Gladiator is one of the best, most entertaining movies of the '90s and early 2000s. Russell Crowe's portrayal of the gladiator Maximum Decimus Meridius was captivating and led to a run of early 2000s Hollywood successes for the New Zealand-born leading man.

Now, in early 2022, it's been more than two decades since Russell Crowe put on the gladiator gear. But that doesn't mean he hasn't forgotten where he came from.

'Gladiator' marked a high point for Crowe's career.

Crowe's big breakout role was in 1997's L.A. Confidential, but he became a true leading man with Gladiator. In the years that followed, he had leading roles in A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, 3:10 to Yuma, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

The film's pivotal scene took place in the Colosseum.

The venerable old building wasn't actually used in the film's production, as a one-third replica of the ancient stadium was constructed in Malta to film in. Regardless, the Colosseum was almost as much of a character in the film as Maximum Decimus Meridius was.

Crowe's back in his old stomping grounds.

On his personal Twitter account, Crowe let his fans in on some of the details of his vacation. As he explains, he's in Rome with his mom and his children — a once in a lifetime trip, no doubt.

They were given special access to some of the sites.

Crowe clearly treasures the time he's getting with his aging mom, remarking on how he's not the only one revisiting Rome, as his parents visited the city when they were younger.

He had to drop by the old office.

Anytime you're revisiting your old stomping grounds, it's crucial to stop by your old home and your old office. Crowe did quite a few memorable scenes that took place in the Colosseum, so it's only natural that he'd show his kids the site.

I'm pretty sure that's the Colosseum.

A bearded, smiling Crowe seems to be making the most of his time in Rome, visiting the Colosseum along with the Vatican and other noteworthy sites. Crowe has two sons with his ex-wife, 18-year-old Charles and 16-year-old Tennyson.

It was clearly a memorable trip.

For what it's worth, and we know Gladiator fans don't need to be told this, but the statement above translates to, "What we do in life echoes in eternity." They're fitting words considering the durability of the ancient Colosseum.

He didn't just stop at the Colosseum.

If you're visiting Rome, it's critical to see as many historical sites as you can. It's tough to fit it all into one trip as Rome has such a rich history, but Crowe clearly did his best.

However, Crowe drew some ire for taking photographs inside the Sistine Chapel, which officially forbids photography — something Jason Momoa also got in trouble for while visiting Rome.

Nevertheless, Crowe's fans loved the pics.

It isn't often that a celebrity willingly documents a private family vacation on social media (usually that's the stuff that's covered by tabloids and paparazzi), so it's great to get an inside look at Crowe's family life.

It seems like Crowe and his family had an epic vacation.

It's tough to line up an overseas family trip with your kids and a parent, but Crowe has the bankroll to do it.
