There are a lot of aspects to modern culture and society that we could have a healthy debate about. But one thing that's undeniable is that when someone is cruel to an animal, they'll quickly learn just how many people will stop at nothing to protect that creature.

We can see this in the consequences businesses tend to face if they let animal abuse go unchecked, but also in how passionate and efficient the internet's response is when people catch someone engaging in such brutality on their own.

But in case this leads an audacious abuser to think this outrage is simply the province of keyboard warriors who wouldn't act so bravely in person, none other than Hollywood actress Jena Malone has recently proved this isn't always the case.

On April 5, NBC 4 reported that a group of people chased a man down after witnessing him beat a dog on the streets of Hollywood.

And in a Twitter reply to that report, Malone not only confirmed that she was there but described how the situation unfolded.

She said she had seen the man repeatedly kick the small dog before liftingit up and choking it. She yelled at him to stop from her car and got out to chase him when he ignored her and started to run away.

And while she noticed that others had watched what the man had done in horror, few were running after him as she was.

As she explained in a follow-up tweet, this prompted Malone to signal for a man in an orange vest to join her, which compelled others to start chasing the man as well.

According to ET Canada, this "felt like a miracle" to Malone and also gave her the impression that she could return to her car as she felt others who had joined the chase were better equipped to subdue the man than she was.

By the time she caught up with the crowd that chased the man for six blocks, she saw that he no longer had the dog and pulled up to ensure the animal was being cared for.

Although she did not witness the apparently intense brawl that followed when the crowd caught up with him, she noticed that the man wasn't bleeding and appeared coherent.

In her words, "I’m sorry that it ended in a brawl but the dog was going to die. No question."

As it stood, she said the dog had already suffered a fractured rib, broken bones in its hind legs and a fractured paw.

Fortunately, the dog had been fitted with a microchip and was able to reunite with its owner who had lost the animal a week prior.

As Malone put it, "His name is Champion and is happily out of hospital and with his owner."

She also provided a link to a GoFundMe page intended to pay for the dog's surgeries, which has already amassed $9,790 of its $10,000 goal at the time of this writing.
