Some famous couples, like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner or Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, have managed to part ways amicably. But for others, breaking up was far from cheap.

Take Bill and Melinda Gates, for example. When they divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, Melinda walked away with a multi-billion-dollar settlement. That included a $12.5 billion fund for her philanthropy work.
She later reflected on their split, saying, “On the day I got married, I never thought I’d be divorced, never,” during an interview on CBS Mornings. “It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I just wasn’t healthy and I couldn’t trust what we had.”
Some celebrities learn costly lessons in love
Kevin Costner also learned a costly lesson in love. His divorce from Cindy Silva in 1994, after 16 years together, cost him a massive $80 million.
Years later, his second marriage to Christine Baumgartner also ended in a legal battle. Christine filed for divorce in 2023 after 18 years, asking for $168,000 a month in child support.
In the end, a judge ruled Kevin would pay $63,000 per month, as per 2024 court records.
