While Halloween is the one day a girl can dress promiscuously and no one can say anything (thanks, Mean Girls !), your birthday is the one day where you get to be as self-absorbed as possible.
Or maybe not.
A woman has gone viral for sharing her story of being called a “narcissist child” because she thinks her birthday should be about her and not her mom…
This juicy story was shared on the “Am I The Asshole” (AITA) community on Reddit.
The 25-year-old female began by sharing that she has three siblings between the ages of 10 and 18. Every year on their birthday, they are expected to share their birthday with their mom. It’s a sort of “thanks for giving birth to us” celebration.
While some women get a “push present” the one time for giving birth, this mom expects her kids to gift her every year.
“As we got older, we’re now expected to get her monetary gifts (and not cards, or homemade stuff),” the Redditor wrote. The mom’s gifts are always better, too.
For example, while the Redditor received dishware and clothes for their new apartment on their recent birthday, their dad got their mom a new Macbook.
These extravagant gifts have overshadowed the children’s birthdays.
The Redditor explained that her sister apologized that she couldn’t get her much because their mom was pressuring her to buy her a certain necklace.
“Apparently my mom had been dropping hints for months and my sister was worried our mom would be upset and feel underappreciated if she didn’t get it.”
That necklace cost $300!
“I honestly lost it on our mom and chewed into her later that afternoon when my mom opened her gifts after me. I think she’s ridiculous for even wanting my sister to spend so much on a gift!”

Speaking up came with some dire consequences.
“Mom started crying and my dad kicked me out. Mom won’t answer calls but my aunt (mom’s sister) called and said I was a POS for not respecting my mother and that I’m a selfish, narcissist child for being jealous of the gifts mom got.”
While the Redditor initially believed she was in the right, now she’s not so sure.
She said that it’s been over two weeks and her mom won’t answer my calls. “She’s been posting on facebook inspiration quotes about letting go of the toxicity in your life, how blood doesn’t equal family, and how hard it is to be a mother.”
“Several family members (aunt, grandma, uncle, and two of my cousins) are replying to the posts and are very obviously directing vague comments at me about being a horrible daughter.”
This has caused the Redditor to question whether she’s in the wrong here. Thankfully, though, she brought her dilemma to Reddit to be the final judge.
They swiftly deemed her as justified in this odd situation.
“NTA. It was her choice to carry 4 children and give birth to them.
Your mother sounds self-centered and selfish. As far as toxicity in one’s life and how blood doesn’t equal family, I think you should apply that to your mother, not to you,” one wrote.
Another said that the mother is correct: you should remove toxicity from your life, starting with her!
If anyone’s narcissistic, Redditors believe it’s the mother. “Maximum gaslighting. The way her younger kids are so afraid to not fulfill her demands for gifts tells you exactly how manipulative this woman is,” one user wrote.
Many questioned how the family celebrates Mother’s Day. “Do each of the children get gifts for being born?” one asked.
“Oh my god thats perfect. On Mothers Day get all the kids to send your parents a list of what you want,” one replied. “When they ask why you think you deserve gifts just act confused and tell them ‘Well, she wouldnt be a mom without us kids right?'”
At the end of the day, giving your mom gifts on your birthday isn’t a normal thing.
The Redditor recently said that she’s entering into therapy to deal with all this. That’s the best birthday present she could give herself!
