There is nothing more satisfying than watching an important event happen and then immediately understand the memes that follow it. Like the Grammys, or the Oscars, or Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration.
While it was exciting to watch the 46th president being sworn in, he kind of got overshadowed by an iconic picture of Bernie Sanders. Now, celebrities are engaged in an unofficial contest of who can win the Bernie meme game.
On January 20, President Joe Biden was officially sworn in at the inauguration ceremony.
Everyone was there — Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, A-Rod, The Obamas, and Bernie Sanders!
With a lot of high profile names in one place, something iconic was bound to happen.
However, I don’t think anyone predicted that thing would be Bernie Sanders going viral.
The 79-year-old was photographed looking a bit grumpy at the inauguration, whilst being bundled up in a coat and mitts.
He looked adorable?? And very cozy.
Naturally, the internet immediately starting making him a meme.
It’s safe to say the Bernie meme is the first viral meme of the year — which is always exciting!
Within a matter of HOURS, Bernie was popping up on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook in a series of fun places.
He even has a crochet pattern that has SOLD like HOT CAKES!
How adorable is this li’l Bernie with his big mittens and his mask?
Imagine trying to explain this crochet Bernie to someone a year ago, lol.
Of course, celebrities quickly took part in the fun.
Hollywood funny guy Ryan Reynolds was among the most popular celebrities to join in on the trend, and in a classic Ryan move, he absolutely CRUSHED it!
Ryan shared this post to his Instagram page:
The meme shows Bernie and his large gloves sitting next to Deadpool on the bridge in the famous scene from the movie.
Obviously, this led to fans everywhere calling for a Bernie cameo in the next Deadpool film!
The Internet prematurely declared it the winner of the Bernie meme.
However, someone else has come to sweep the title.
It’s a man you know and love with all your heart…
IT’S JASON MOMOA!
The actor has officially joined in on the fun and reposted a fan-made meme that has fans declaring he won the internet!
“BANGO UNKO BERNIE @berniesanders #UNITY. whoever did this Mahalo for the giggles,” the actor wrote on his Instagram.
I have to admit, it may be the best one I’ve seen too.
This Jason Momoa meme was already one of the most iconic memes of all time and adding Bernie — making it like a meme-inception — that was something I wasn’t prepared for spiritually.
Sorry, Ryan, but I think this one has got to go to our baby boy, Jason!
A lot of people didn’t even know it was Jason in the original meme so you’re welcome, world!
We love educating the masses on pop culture.
If you ask me, 2021 is off to a pretty good start.
In the words of Shania Twain, “Up, up, up, can only go up from here!”
