Trump just had his first speech in front of Congress on March 4, 2025. While he did talk about a lot of things — like tariffs, egg prices, and Ukraine — one thing stood out.
He spent a decent chunk of time addressing Greenland, and even JD Vance couldn’t help but comment on how long Trump went on about it.
In between reminiscing about his past electoral victory and throwing some shade at Joe Biden’s administration, Trump made some interesting, bold claims about Greenland.
Trump directs a message to the people of Greenland
Trump had a special message for the people of Greenland. He said, “We strongly support your right to determine your own future. And if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.”
He also said, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. And we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security.”
So, he’s offering Greenland the freedom to choose, but it doesn’t sound like it’s really an option. Trump ended his message by saying, “And I think we’re going to get it – one way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
He sounded pretty confident
Trump didn’t leave much room for doubt. He made it pretty clear, saying, “And I think we’re going to get it – one way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
Looking back at Trump’s earlier comments about Greenland
Back in January, after a heated call with Denmark’s Prime Minister, Trump made a pretty bold statement. He said, “I think we’re going to have it. I think the people want to be with us.”
Tensions between the US and Denmark over Greenland

He didn’t seem too concerned with Denmark’s long-standing claim to Greenland, saying, “I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world.”
He also said, “I think Greenland, we’ll get because it has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we’re the one that can provide the freedom. They can’t.”
So, it’s all about freedom…and, apparently, the U.S. being the one to provide it.
Trump emphasized why Greenland matters
He said, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. And we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security.”
So, Trump’s vision for Greenland is all about global security — or that’s how he sees it.
What Trump envisions for Greenland’s future
During his speech, Trump continued to talk directly to the people of Greenland, saying, “We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”
He’s got big dreams for the place, that’s for sure.
