After Donald Trump expressed his wish to acquire Greenland, Danish campaigners are firing back with a proposal to buy California from the United States, turning it into Danish territory.
The “Denmarkification” campaign’s aim is to crowdfund $1 trillion to have California under its possession, instilling its core values and beliefs in it and making the most out of its resources and sunny weather.
Why Trump wants Greenland
The president expressed interest in Denmark’s autonomous territory for its vast mineral wealth and strategic importance.
For now, it is still unclear whether Trump intends to use military or economic power in order to attain the territory of interest.
The political aspect of having Greenland
This wasn’t the first time Trump brought up owning Greenland, as he sparked controversy by questioning whether Denmark has a right to Greenland or not, saying: “People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up, because we need it for national security.”
The Denmarkification website fires back
While the website hasn’t mentioned Trump’s threats, they used terms similar to those used by Republicans. For instance, they vowed to “make California great again.”
The online petition gained over 200,000 signatures in a matter of hours.
What Denmark intends to do
The mastermind behind the “to help Denmark buy California – because why not?” campaign was Xavier Dutoit.
The campaign promises to rename the state “New Denmark” and to transform the Disney Resort into “Hans Christian Andersenland” – complete with a Viking helmet-wearing Mickey Mouse.
Dutoit’s ambitions
Dutoit told Playbook reporter Šejla Ahmatović that Lego Bosses should run the talk between the US and Denmark, saying: “Dealing with children throwing tantrums over missing bricks has made them experts in negotiation.”
Trump may be welcoming of the idea
The page argues that Trump may be open to selling California as he pointed out before that he “isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan.”
In addition, he is not on the best terms with Californians Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris, and things have been heated between them for years.
Dutoit thinks the goal is achievable
Dutoit believes that adding a lifetime supply of Danish pastries that “Hollywood will pay for” would be a sweet addition to the deal that will make saying no a tough task.
Dutoit also believes that if every Dane paid just 200,000 kroner (around $18,000), having $1 trillion would no longer be a problem.
The website makes a lot of promises
The page promises that Danish customs and values will be fully integrated into California, saying: “We’ll bring hygge to Hollywood, bike lanes to Beverly Hills, and organic smørrebrød to every street corner. Rule of law, universal health care and fact based politics might apply.”
Trump receives a blow
The website promises that Denmark will “protect the free world” if it runs California and adds that the “will of citizens” has never been a hurdle when it came down to the president from carrying out a business deal.
The satirical campaign also promises sun and avocadoes

In an attempt to get the Danes on board with the plan, the page tempts its readers with California’s sunny weather in contrast to Denmark’s chilling one.
Furthermore, the Danes love avocadoes, and the page promises a ton of it, saying: “We’ll never run out of avocado toast.”
