The world is full of unexpected things. For example, sometimes you don’t expect something to hurt that much, and yet it hurts way more than it probably should.
That brings us to the recent question someone posed on Ask Reddit : “What is way more physically painful than it should be?” And the answers? Well, let’s just say they’re pretty relatable.
“Getting stabbed by a Dorito in the upper ceiling of the mouth.” – Daiki_438

Or really, any kind of chip. Those hard corners can be way more dangerous than you might think. You know, until it’s too late. And next thing you know, you can’t eat anything else for a little bit.
“Unexpected hit to the nose. Doesn’t even have to be that hard. Makes you tear up even as a sting fills the front of your face.” – Wild_Preference_9749
Why are our noses so delicate? It doesn’t take much for your nose to hurt, like, a lot. It’s even worse when you end up with a nosebleed, too.
“Swallowing too much water at once. Seriously it’s like your throat explodes.” – TkOHarley
Oh my gosh, right? That definitely hurts waaaay more than it should. It’s like your body’s trying to punish you for trying to stay hydrated or something. Make up your mind!
“Teeth sensitivity problem.” – hellotawsif
It’s all fun and games until you drink something really hot or bite into a really cold thing. Then it’s like every nerve in your teeth decided to set themselves on fire at once. Not fun.
“Paper cut.” – MrBirb_
I’m sure you know the feeling. They always happen when you least expect it, and the pain from those tiny cuts lasts for hours . Like, the nerve of paper, making our fingers hurt as much as they do.
“I was gardening. Got poked by a rose thorn. Yes the thorn hurt but for the next few days the finger it poked had the most excruciating pain when I bend my joints. It was awful.” – shaka_sulu

Sure, every rose has its thorns. But you wouldn’t expect them to hurt that much. It’s like those pretty little flowers are out to get us or something.
“Hitting the back of your hand on something as you walk by. I did that on a metal sink a couple times at work. Metal corner right into the bone on the back of the hand. Excruciatingly painful.” – MrSandman000

I hit the back of my hand on a grocery store display once and it hurt for days. That’s so much worse than it really should be.
“Brain freeze. Nothing should be remotely painful from eating ice cream.” – shaka_sulu
Brain freeze doesn’t last a long time, but in the moment it feels like hours. Probably because your brain is all frozen and stuff (I don’t think that’s actually how it works).
“Owning a playful cat.” – HollynBerry
Cats may be cute and (mostly) lovable, but they have some really sharp claws. And when they want to play, your arms and face are in for it. Come to think of it, you’re in for it when they’re angry, too.
“Hang nail or an ingrown hair.” – Marvelous_7

It’s funny how such small, seemingly insignificant things on our bodies can cause us so much pain. Do you think our skin is out to get us? Or are we all just way more dramatic then we really need to be?
“Pregnancy.” – kitcat7898
“I don’t know if it’s normal but everything… hurt. He kicked my bladder, he kept a foot in my lungs and one in my stomach so I couldn’t breathe or eat. Dragged his feet down my ribs every chance he got.”
I don’t have kids… but I’ve heard the stories.
“Biting your tongue?” – Navtej_7

Oof, especially when you bite a little corner. On the plus side, tongues heal super quickly. You just have to deal with excruciating pain for a little while. You win some, you lose some. Or something.
“A really sore throat. I think I’d rather have a broken bone.” – AngelicSabotage

When you’re sick with a sore throat, your body really lets you know. Being sick sucks in general, but it’s at least a little better if you don’t have a sore throat.
“When your ear accidentally folds while you sleep that hurts like hell for days.” – incepince
It happens way too often when I sleep on my side, And yet, I’m a side sleeper. It’s like a never ending cycle of ear pain that I can’t escape from. Sigh …
“Stepping on tiny Lego Brick.” – REGO350

I swear, stepping on Lego is a fate worse than death. How can such small, insignificant blocks cause your feet so much pain? It seriously makes me never want to have Lego in my house.
“Burning yourself with hot glue.” – No-Zookeepergame8638
It’s funny how a burn from hot glue can feel just as painful as a burn from hot sugar. I mean, I guess a burn is a burn when it comes down to it, but man, does hot glue ever hurt!
“Hitting your shin. Why were we built with zero shin protection??” – nate6259

Have you ever owned a bed with a metal frame? Maybe you have one right now. In any case, if you’ve ever hit your shin against one of them, then you know the pain.
“Being hungover in your 30s.” – scxiao

“It didn’t even come gradually, One Sunday you’re walking on sunshine and the next you walk through the valley of the shadow of Death.”
Oh great, something for me to look forward to in a few years.
“Hitting the side of your knee on any furniture.” – shadeandshine
Just like hurting your shins or ankles on a bed frame, hurting your knees on literally anything really sucks. How is it that every hit to the knee ends up causing bruises for days?
“Lemon juice hitting an open cut.” – GhantChart
“Like I get it, lemon juice is acidic but why must I my brain process a drop of lemon juice in my blood as the world has ended?”
Cooking with lemon juice is the best way to learn about any cuts on your hands you didn’t know about…
