Sydney Sweeney has quite the rise in the last few years .
While she’s been acting since she was 12, she didn’t get her big break until she was cast in three major shows in 2018 and 2019: The Handmaid’s Tale , Sharp Objects , and Euphoria .
She’s never been shy to admit that her body had something to do with the delay. And now — thanks to her low-rise skirt at the MTV Movie Awards — she’s sparked controversy again .
In an interview with ‘Allure,’ the 24-year-old said that she was shamed for having a developed body at a young age.
“As an actor, you always want to play younger, especially when you’re under 18 , because you can work longer hours if you’re 14 playing a 10-year-old than if you’re a 10-year-old playing a 10-year-old,” she said.
“And so my problem was, I’ve always had really big b***s since I was 12 years old,” she continued.
She believed that this tampered with her career for many years. “And so I was 14 years old auditioning for these 10-year-olds, and people would look at me and be like, ‘No.’”
The Washington native expressed that beauty standards have made it hard for Hollywood to look past her body.
“It was so crazy to me because I was like, ‘But when I was 12, I had these b***s.’ It was this standard that girls didn’t have a body unless they were an adult.”
Naturally, it was hard to be judged by her body at such a young age.
“I was getting shamed for having a developed body at a young age. It was really hard because then I was constantly trying to hide myself and hide my body.”
This impacted her career so much, she even had to wait until she was older to audition for certain roles.
“They’re like, ‘Oh yes, now you can have b***s because you’re an adult.’ It was a mind [expletive],” she told the publication.
Now, the ‘Euphoria’ star’s body has people up in arms again.
This time, it’s over the all-pink glittery micro-mini skirt paired with a super-cropped collared top by Miu Miu. The skirt hung low on her hips and showed off her toned midriff.
Since people are already wary about the low-rise trend coming back, they weren’t impressed.
“What in the early 2000’s is this?” s omeone commented on a video posted by WhoWhatWear . “Not me thinking this was a throwback post,” another wrote.
The star’s outfit was compared to those worn by Paris Hilton, Tara Reid, and Britney Spears – all low-rise queens of the early ’00s.
But just as it did back then, Sweeney’s low-rise revealing outfit triggered some body insecurity in some.
“No shade to beautiful Sydney… but I’m sad we’re seeing more of this ULTRA low rise waist and ULTRA flat tummy look again,” a user commented.
“So coveted yet unachievable for so many of us with different builds,” another added.
Many claimed that body positivity will go in a negative direction now that women will feel as though they need a flat stomach to show their midriff.
“Low rise NEVER AGAIIIN! Young generations: learn from the pst!! Don’t ruin your body!!!” others added.
While Sydney is in no way at fault (she looks amazing!), the issue with these micromini looks is that it’s not all-inclusive yet.
We’ve yet to see plus-size models like Ashley Graham or Paloma rock it. Until this happens and everyone feels represented, there is only one type of body type that fits this look — and therein lies the problem.
