Actress Nicole Kidman and her husband, country musician Keith Urban, have just made a huge donation in order to help combat the wildfires currently raging in their home country of Australia.
25 people have died in Australia as a result of the wildfires that continue to spread throughout the country.
The fires have been burning since September of 2019, although an outpouring of celebrity support and awareness-raising in the recent weeks have pushed the devastation to the forefront of popular culture.
Nicole and Keith, who live in Australia, have a personal stake in these fires.
While initial reports suggested that their house had been burned down, a rep for Kidman clarified that “it is under threat,” and that they are “keeping a close eye on it.”
The couple have just made a massive donation in order to help with the fight.
Nicole shared this list of local state fire services that are accepting donations with the caption, “Our family’s support, thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the fires all over Australia. We are donating $500,000 to the Rural Fire Services who are all doing and giving so much right now.”
Speaking to 10 News First, Nicole discussed the tragedy, saying, “We’re devastated.”
“We’re devastated for Australia right now,” she told the interviewer.
What a powerful donation from Nicole and Keith that will do a lot of good for the people and wildlife of Australia!
Nicole and Keith aren’t the only celebrities who have been fighting back against the wildfires.
Musician Pink shared that she was also donating $500k to the local state fire services in a tweet containing links for her followers to donate as well.
Singer Kylie Minogue made a $500k donation as well.
Kylie announced her and her family were making the donation towards the immediate firefighting efforts and ongoing support that will be needed after the fires are all contained.
The Irwin family have also been urging fans to donate towards the Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital amidst the fires.
“Our Wildlife Hospital is busier than ever though, having officially treated over 90,000 patients. My parents dedicated our Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to my beautiful grandmother. We will continue to honour her by being Wildlife Warriors and saving as many lives as we can,” Bindi wrote, urging her followers to make a donation to Wildlife Warriors .
Fellow Australian actress Margot Robbie shared an emotional video urging her followers to donate as well.
Margot shared photographs of her childhood growing up in Australia, explaining that though people have seen photos of the devastation of the country, she wanted them to see how beautiful it is too.
Actor Russell Crowe made a powerful statement at the Golden Globes as well.
Though Russell won a Golden Globe for his performance in The Loudest Voice , rather than showing up to accept the award he instead had a statement read on his behalf, stating, “We need to act based on science, move our global workplace to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is — that way we all have a future.”
