Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are two holidays that are set every year to honor parents all over the world. The two days a year give children the ability to recognize how hard their parents work at raising, loving, and nurturing them.
However, not every family has a mother and a father . Not every family is “nuclear” the way that it used to be.
Many people have been outspoken against gender-specific holidays.
People in the media have spoken out against gender-specific holidays because not every family has a mother or a father.
Some families have single parents, while others have two dads or two moms. Then, there are those who have non-binary parents, too.
However, just because these families exist, that doesn’t mean that everyone likes to talk about it.
In fact, many parents are uncertain about how to have these kinds of conversations with their children.
And other parents simply do not like it at all.
But other parents are pointing out that while it’s okay that every family looks different, it’s still important to acknowledge dads!

One mom is now speaking out about her daughter’s nursery that “renamed” Father’s Day.
Karla Gardner, a 36-year-old from London, spoke out to news outlets and on Facebook that her 3-year-old daughter came home with a card that really bothered her.
She thought that her daughter’s nursery would make something Father’s Day themed, but it didn’t happen.
The nursery teacher apparently made comments the mom found inappropriate.
Gardner said that the nursey teacher said to kids that “men don’t matter.”
Additionally, the Father’s Day cards didn’t have anything related to fathers! Instead, they read: “Happy Special’s Day”. The mom said she was “heartbroken” when she saw the card.
The mom said she was appalled.
“When I picked her up in the afternoon, I had no idea they were doing Father’s Day cards, she just came out with it,” Gardner said.
“When I looked at it and it said Happy Special’s Day, it angered me.”
Gardner said the nursery said it was “not inclusive.”
The nursery allegedly told Gardner that it “wasn’t fair” for children without fathers to have to make a “Happy Father’s Day” card.
However, Gardner also said that the nursery had made the cards last year, so she was unsure why this year was different.
She claimed it was “confusing” for her daughter.
“For Mother’s Day, I got a card which had photos of her inside it and it said clearly on it ‘Happy Mother’s Day’. A big fuss was made of it.”
“As a three-year-old, I might think ‘why is it wrong to have a dad in my life? Why’s it not being recognised?,” Gardner added.
Which, she definitely isn’t wrong about that, and makes a good point.
Not every family is the same, but why can’t a child who does have a dad make a father’s day card?
Gardner also said this is hurting children who may want to gift the card to another family member.
“Not all children don’t have their dad. Some of those children whose dad doesn’t live with them, they still have a relationship with them.”
She pointed out that even though not everyone has a dad, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a man in their life that they look up to and trust.
“I know people who make Father’s Day cards and give it to their granddad or uncle. This is just shutting them out,” she said.
Many people online said Gardner was “angry for nothing.”
Some people online sided with Gardner, but others said that she was being “unfair” to other kids.
Also, others pointed out that she could have helped her daughter make another card at home, and it didn’t have to be done at school.
Which is true, but the point is that they did do a mother’s day card, so it makes it unfair to not do a father’s day card.
