A medical examiner’s report has revealed that Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were separated for four months before Baena’s death in January. He had also sent her a text message on the morning of the day of his death.
The report revealed the separation
A report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner Coroner revealed that Plaza and Baena had been separated in September 2024, according to People.
47-year-old Baena had remained in his home in LA while Plaza, 40, stayed in New York.
Baena had expressed ‘concerning remarks’ to Plaza
The medical examiner report also states that a month after the separation, Baena made “concerning remarks” to Plaza which “prompted her to call a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband.”
Baena had started going to therapy following the welfare check in October 2024 but later died by suicide on Friday 3 January.
Baena had texted Plaza the day of his death
The report further states the last text message Plaza received from the writer-director was on the day of his death at 10:36 a.m. E.T.
Baena’s body was found by his dog walker who entered the home upon hearing loud music, which was unusual for Baena.
There was no note but a phone was found
There was no suicide note found around Baena’s body but there had been a cellphone which was found by investigators on a step between the rails on the staircase in his home.
His family issued a statement after his death
Following Baena’s untimely death, Plaza and the family issued a statement asking people for privacy, saying, “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
Baena was a writer and director
Jeff Baena was a writer and director best known for his directorial debut Life After Beth, which starred Plaza, and an anthology series called Cinema Toast which he wrote and Plaza directed.
The couple had met and started dating in 2011 and got married on a whim in May 2021, as per Plaza herself. Baena had more than a dozen directing credits to his name.
Plaza’s first appearance after his death was a tribute

The actress’s first public appearance since Baena’s death was at the SNL 50th anniversary event on 16 February when she wore a tie-dye shirt in honor of her late husband.
Plaza had explained that Baena had a love for tie-dye shirts, with the couple even wearing tie-dye pajamas made by Baena himself for their small wedding in 2021.
