A man has taken to Reddit to ask if he did the right thing after a tense family dinner that ended abruptly.
He took to the famous online community
The man wrote a post to the well-known online community ‘Am I Overreacting’ on Reddit, asking people if he overreacted when he asked his parents to leave following a question posed to his wife.
He explained that his wife had gained some weight after their wedding.
She was insecure about it

The husband wrote of his wife, “I think she’s gorgeous, but she’s insecure about how she looks now.”
He went on to share that they recently hosted his parents, who had just moved about an hour away, for dinner at their home.
The evening quickly went sideways

The dinner didn’t go as planned, as the man recalled, “My parents arrived early, and my wife hadn’t changed out of her cooking clothes. She was wearing this tight t-shirt.”
His mother seemed to cross a line. He wrote, “My mom grabbed my wife’s belly and asked if she was pregnant.”
His wife responded to the question

“My wife said no, that she’s just getting fat. I didn’t want a massive argument, so I rushed my parents out — basically telling them we had to reschedule, congratulations on the new house, and that we’d save them some food. I then assured my wife as she started to cry,” he went on.
The issue dragged on for a few days
The awkward situation dragged on days later when he spoke to his parents alone. The husband recounted, “My mom said she had made a mistake, but I had taken it too far by asking them to leave.”
“My dad said that by not allowing my mom to apologize that day, I made them seem like jerks to my wife.”
They don’t want to apologize now
He went on, “I told my parents my mom can apologize now, but my parents say that now it will seem to my wife that they’re apologizing because I told them to.”
Turning to the Reddit community, he’s now asking, “Am I overreacting?”
People seemed to back him up
Since he made the post, hundreds of people have shared their thoughts on it, with many seeming to back him up.
One person wrote, “Honestly it’s just nice to see somebody actually supporting their partner on this website. I think you’re in the clear.”
Many advised him to stand his ground

Another user wrote, “It’s frustrating when people deflect like that. Staying firm is the only way to protect yourself.”
“I’m team husband all the way on this one. And for what it’s worth, the parents could have called to apologize at any time. They don’t get to try turning it around to make them the victim,” wrote a third.
