Keira Knightley is one of the most iconic and quintessential early 2000s actresses. From Love Actually to Pirates of the Carribean . From Pride and Prejudice to Atonement , it’s no wonder Keira looms large in our hearts!
Now, the actress is opening up about what it means to be a modern woman in the entertainment industry.
Keira Knightly is best known for appearing in cult classic films like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Pride and Prejudice.”
She is truly one of the most memorable faces in Hollywood, and with a relatively quiet private life, fans love any insider info we can get on the actress.
While chatting with *Stellar* magazine, Keira got candid about life, love, acting, and gender roles.
When asked about other people’s perceptions of her, Kiera confidently replied, according to The Daily Telegraph : “What’s nice about being in my mid-30s is that I can safely say I don’t care.”
“It’s brilliant,” she continued.
“When you have kids, you’re so tired and you’re so focused on that… a lot of the other peripheral stuff just goes, and that’s really nice. You just don’t have time or energy.”
She revealed she felt the fast fame from *Pirates of the Caribbean* very deeply.
“I did feel it very, very intensely. It wasn’t nice and it was very difficult. And I think if I was at that level of fame now I would be equally stressed out with the whole thing. And it would be very difficult,” she explained.
“Particularly with children. I wouldn’t like to do that at all. But I think it’s much nicer being older. I hope I’m much more comfortable in my own skin,” she continued.
When asked if having her two children, five-year-old Edie and one-year-old Delilah, made her less selfish, Keira replied it had: “Yeah, and I think that process is interesting. It’s a really hard journey to becoming less selfish. It’s not an easy lesson, is it?”
It’s safe to say the 35-year-old is not known for her controversial statements, so when she likened acting to “prostitution” later on in the interview, it was bold, to say the least.
Speaking about her upcoming 1970s beauty pageant film, Misbehaviour , Keira revealed she related to the script.
“I read the script and I naturally totally agreed with the second-wave feminists [protesting] yet I’ve made most of my money as a model [for Chanel].”
“I go on red carpets where you’re given marks out of 10 and you have cameras up and down your body.”
“I think that’s the complexity of being a woman in the modern age,” she continued.
“Still the No. 1 career in the world — the only one — where a woman can earn more than a man is modelling. Or prostitution. And that says everything it needs to say to young women.”
The actress went on to say this is a big indicator of the “world we still live in,” that women are told, “the way you look is more important than what you have to say or what you think.”
The actress was then asked if these inequalities have made her reconsider her career.
“I’m super happy with the money I’ve earned, the lifestyle I have because of that and the experiences I’ve had,” Kiera responded.
“That’s why I think this film is really interesting. It tells those two sides.”
“It says this is [expletive] horrible, I’m totally against this and this objectification is awful, and yet it will give me opportunity,” she explained.
“I suddenly become visible in a world where I’m invisible, and that has merit and that has value, and I could have a better life afterwards. It’s what we’re all still grappling with.”
