The two Pirates of the Caribbean stars Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley have shared a kiss on screen during the famous movie series, particularly in the second one, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
Johnny Depp has spoken about the awkwardness of having to film the kiss with Keira Knightley with 22 years of age difference between them, while Knightley shared her feelings regarding the franchise as a whole.
They starred in the movie franchise
Depp and Knightley starred together in the five-part blockbuster movie series Pirates of the Caribbean which spanned from 2003 to 2017 as the two characters Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann.
The franchise also featured other popular actors like Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom.
Knightley started the series at 17
Keira Knightley was only 17 years old when she starred in the first movie, The Curse of the Black Spot, and has previously admitted that the success of the movie resulted in her struggle with fame.
This caused her to turn to work in more independent movies.
The kiss was in the second movie
The sequel titled Dead Man’s Chest was released in 2006, three years after the first movie.
In this one, Knightley and Depp share a kiss on the basis of the love triangle between their characters and Orlando Bloom’s character Will Turner, who she ends up with.
There’s quite the age gap between Depp and Knightley
At the time of filming Dead Man’s Chest, the Atonement actress was only 19, with a 22-year age gap between her and the Edward Scissorhands actor who was 41 years old at the time.
The two shared a kiss on screen and later spoke about the discomfort of it.
Depp felt awkward about the kiss
“Kissing someone you are not romantically involved with is always awkward, but the fact that Keira is twenty something years younger than me made it infinitely more awkward,” Depp told The Standard in 2012.
“Still, she was a good sport about it and we did what we had to do,” he added.
Knightley also shared her thoughts
The Pride and Prejudice star also shared her thoughts on the on-screen kiss, telling TMZ in 2006, “I couldn’t ask for a better kissing scene with Johnny Depp actually I think my 14-year-old self was yelping with pleasure. It was fantastic!”
The British actress enjoyed filming
She continued talking about the kiss saying, “What more can a girl ask for? I’ve got Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and I get to kiss both of them. It’s wonderful!”
Despite her excitement, the actress later revealed that the stardom was too much for her.
Knightley struggled with the franchise’s fame
Upon reflection, Knightley said that she was in need of “many years of therapy” to be able to handle the quick rise to fame that she experienced due to the franchise’s major success.
It even led her to turn towards more independent movies.
She admitted that the fame was too much
“The fame that came with them I just couldn’t handle. So looking back, would I do anything different? No, I wouldn’t because I’m unbelievably lucky now, and my career is in a place where I really enjoy it, and I have a level of fame that’s much less intense,” the star told The Telegraph in 2019.
Knightley shared her confusion regarding the franchise
In another interview with The Times, the actress spoke about how the franchise was both what made her famous and what caused her to struggle so much in the industry.
“They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So, they’re in a very confused place in my head,” she admitted.
