Jimmy Kimmel said he had a backup plan in case politics in America got too messy.
During a chat with Sarah Silverman on her podcast earlier this month, the 57-year-old late-night host revealed he had actually secured Italian citizenship.
Kimmel talks about his new citizenship
Silverman mentioned that plenty of people she knew were looking into dual citizenship. That’s when Kimmel admitted, “I did get Italian citizenship. I do have that.”
He throws some shade on Trump’s presidency
Kimmel spoke about Trump’s time in office, saying, “As bad as you thought it was gonna be, it’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable. I feel like it’s probably even worse than he would like it to be.”
Silverman added that she hoped people who voted for Trump might eventually regret that choice, and maybe the whole thing would somehow bring people closer together.
Kimmel says admitting you’re wrong is rare
He followed up with a point about how challenging it is for people to change their minds. “If you want to change your mind, that’s so hard to do. If you want to admit you are wrong, that’s so hard and so rare to do,” he said.
The feud between Kimmel and Trump keeps growing
Kimmel and Trump’s back-and-forth heated up not long after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was canceled in mid-July.
The news dropped just as Colbert had been calling out CBS for a big settlement with Trump, which added more fuel to the fire.
CBS pushes back on the rumors
After speculation swirled, the network stepped in to deny the connection.
“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE.
Kimmel shows love for Colbert and slams CBS
Kimmel responded by posting a clip of Colbert, who had taken over from David Letterman back in 2015. “Love you Stephen,” he wrote on Instagram Stories. Then he aimed straight at CBS, adding, “F— you and all your Sheldons CBS.”
He joins a protest against Trump
On the same day as the cancellation, Kimmel shared photos of himself with his family at an anti-Trump protest.
He captioned one of the posts, “May every day be another wonderful secret,” which was a nod to a strange letter Trump had once written to Jeffrey Epstein, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Trump takes a shot back at Kimmel
Not long after, Trump fired off a message on Truth Social. He wrote, “The word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, [Jimmy] Fallon will be gone.”
Other stars decide to live overseas
Kimmel may have gotten Italian citizenship, but he wasn’t the only one making a move.
Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres had already chosen to relocate, with O’Donnell heading to Ireland and DeGeneres to England, both citing Trump’s presidency as a big reason.
