The Oscars have faced a lot of criticism in the past few years based on how heavily they have favored largely white films, actors, and actresses over the years. While they’ve made steps to change this , actress Halle Berry has noticed that since her historic win in 2002, not one other Black woman has won Best Actress at the awards.
Halle Berry made history when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002 for her role in *Monster’s Ball*.
Not only did she make personal history by winning her first ever Oscar, she also was the first Black woman to ever win Best Actress.
“This award is for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened,” Halle said in her acceptance speech at the time.
However, Halle is still the only Black woman to have taken home the award.

“The heartbreak I have is because I really thought that night meant that very soon after that, other women of color, Black women, would stand beside me,” Halle recently said in a new interview about no other Black woman receiving the honor in almost 20 years.
“Now it’s been 20 years and no one has,” Halle went on.

“So every time Oscar time comes around, I get very reflective and I think, ‘Well maybe this year, maybe this year,'” Halle continued. There have been five Black women who have been nominated for the award since Halle’s win in 2002: Gabourey Sidibe, Viola Davis, Quvenzhane Wallis, Ruth Negga, and Cynthia Ervio.
“It has become heartbreaking that no one else has stood there.”
