Breaking news for all Game of Thrones fans out there, there’s finally a release date for the upcoming prequel series House of The Dragon , a show that dives into the history of the House of Targaryen.
Set to come out late this summer , it edges just ahead of the upcoming Lord of the Rings series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power , as well, making it a packed few weeks for lovers of high fantasy.
Three years after the finale of ‘Game of Thrones’ comes the eagerly awaited spinoff.
House of The Dragon takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It tells the story of the House of Targaryen, and how it fell into a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, marking the beginning of the end of the ruling family of Westeros.
The first season will feature 10 episodes.
The premiere date was just announced by HBO to be August 21, and despite the show not even having aired yet, they’re pretty confident it’ll be well received.
In fact, HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys told Variety that “it’s probably a pretty good bet” the show will get a second season. “Generally speaking, we usually let something air and see how it does, but obviously, we’ll make preparations ahead of time to make sure we’re ahead of the game.”
Someone else has put his confidence into the show’s quality, George R.R. Martin himself.
This series was based on his novel “Fire & Blood”, and in a blog post written last month he said, “I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them. […] the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do.”
We know we’re excited to see where this series takes us!
It appears the series will go straight to streaming on HBO Max given the logo on the premiere image. The show features a brand new cast, including Paddy Considine as King Viserys I, Emmy D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenrya, and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon.
