Tony Award-winning actor Brian Dennehy, known for many memorable roles across film and stage, has passed away at the age of 81, his daughter confirmed on Twitter.
Dennehy was best known for his work in films like ‘First Blood’ and ‘Tommy Boy.’
Dennehy also had roles in films like Cocoon and Presumed Innocent. He often played lawmen, and was known for his 6’3″ frame. Dennehy also won two Tony Awards for playing Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman on Broadway.
His daughter, Elizabeth, confirmed his passing in a statement on Twitter.
“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related,” she wrote.
Elizabeth’s tweet continued.
“Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends,” she wrote.
Fans took to social media to express their condolences.
Many fans took the time to admire what fantastic talent Dennehy possessed, and how meaningful his work and appearances had been to them.
Many told stories of when they had met Dennehy.
One fan referred to him as “the most humble, modest, down to earth human being you’d ever want to meet,” while sharing a photo taken with him at a charity event.
Fellow actors also remembered Dennehy fondly.
Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda shared a touching tweet on the impact Dennehy had when Miranda saw him on stage in multiple plays.
Dennehy was 81.
Dennehy is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and his children, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Dierdre, Cormac, and Sarah.
