Gwyneth Paltrow is sparking controversy online after recently implying that she introduced mask-wearing culture into society after first sporting a mask on Instagram back in February 2020. It’s not unbelievable that the actress and wellness company owner would make such a bold claim. It’s Gwnyeth after all.
Now, the internet isn’t letting that interview go and have taken to social media to mock her claims.
Gwyneth Paltrow did *a lot* of things last year.

In case you need a quick refresh, 2020 was the year of the vagina candle .
It was also the year that her controversial Netflix series, The Goop Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow , premiered to very mixed reviews.
While the world was quarantined, Gwyneth faced backlash for suggesting people learn a new language.
“i suggest stealing all the money Gwyneth Paltrow made by telling people to stay healthy by putting crystals in their vagina,” tweeted one critic.
However, 2020 was also the year that Gwyneth *invented* wearing face masks. Wait, what?
If you’ll recall, Gwyneth was one of the first celebrities to post a selfie wearing an N95 mask while speaking about COVID-19.
On February 26, 2020, Gwyneth posted the following selfie:

“En route to Paris. Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane,” she wrote.
“I’ve already been in this movie. Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently.”
Of course, Gwyneth was referencing her 2011 film, Contagion , the medical thriller that tells the story of a deadly virus that sweeps across the world.
Remember when people were watching that movie for fun ?
Now, a year later, the actress is reflecting back on that selfie.

In an interview with The New York Times , Gwyneth admitted she felt being ahead of the curve is just part of her brand.
“This is a familiar pattern in my life,” she told the publication.
“I do something early, everyone is like: ‘What is she doing? She’s insane.’ And then it’s adopted by the culture.”
Naturally, such a bold statement garnered a lot of attention on social media.
“Okay Gwyneth calm down,” wrote one Twitter user.
As fans may recall, this isn’t the first time Gwyneth has claimed to have started a “trend” that has been around forever.
Back in 2018, Gwyneth told a hilarious story to The Wall Street Journal about how she basically invented yoga.
You know, the ancient Indian tradition of yoga, which was obviously started by the American actress.
“I went to do a yoga class in L.A. recently and the 22-year-old girl behind the counter was like, ‘Have you ever done yoga before?,’” she told the publication.
“And literally I turned to my friend, and I was like, ‘You have this job because I’ve done yoga before.'”
Yikes.
Naturally, these confused and angry sentiments continued when Gwyneth said she made masks popular.
“The totally unwarranted self-confidence Gwyneth displays is almost breathtaking at times,” remarked one Twitter user.
“This interview is yuck,” agreed another.
“Imagine thinking you’re a trendsetter wearing a mask during a pandemic,” someone else wrote, while another joked, “Everyone say thanks to Gwyneth for starting the mask trend and saving our lives.”
