How we speak and what we say have a profound effect on people. It quite literally shapes the perspective of how others view and interact with us. Sometimes for better and other times for worse.
Below are 15 common phrases which are commonly used, that actually point to someone being a bad person. If you hear yourself in any of these statements, you’d best correct it pronto.
“That’s just the way I am.”
Believe it or not, simply acknowledging the fact that you happen to be an a-hole doesn’t give you free rein to go ahead and act like one. An acknowledgment of the behavior is never a justification.
“You’ll change your mind.”
Why is it that whenever I tell someone that I have no interest in having kids, they always respond with “you’ll change your mind.” It’s so arrogant and condescending that I don’t even know where to begin.
“Don’t give me your excuses.”
“That one kills me. Like if your[sic] late to work or something and someone says why were you late. Well my explanation is that there was a car accident. Then they follow up with no excuses.” – Reddit u/SnooPeripherals2455
“Don’t you know that the customer’s always right?”
No, I don’t. In fact, in my experience working in customer service — the customer is almost always wrong. This is usually thrown out in a last-ditch effort to win an argument when you know full well that you’re in the wrong.
“Only God can judge me.”
Why do some pious twerps believe themselves to be better than others solely because of their faith? I hope God does exist because if he does judge you — you’re probably going straight to hell.
“I’m friends with the owner.”
If you really were friends with the owner, then I’d hope that they’d reprimand you for acting like such a complete and total ass in their place of business. Stop trying to flex, calm down, and wait your turn.
“I tell it like it is.”
Just to clarify, you aren’t telling it like it is. You’re telling it how you see it or think it is. Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion but your view of the world doesn’t trump someone else’s.
“I’m living the dream.”
I used to work the morning shift at a call center for one of the big banks. Every morning when I’d ask my manager “how are you?” he’d always reply “I’m living the dream.”
Talk about a blatant bald-faced lie.
“It’s for your own good.”
I’m pretty sure that you are in no position to try and tell me what is and what is not for my own good. Why don’t you just put your hands in your pockets and keep your thoughts to yourself?
“Because I said so.”
I can’t even begin to recall all the times I heard this phrase uttered to me when I was a child. Just because you’re a parent, doesn’t make you the ultimate authority on everything. Kids need to be allowed to question every once in a while.
“Do you know who I am?”
Why is it that jerks always will always try and assert their dominance by asking “Do you know who I am?” Obviously, the answer is no. And even if I did, I still wouldn’t care.

Sure this statement is true, in theory, but more often than not people tend to really abuse the former part of the statement. Yes, everyone is entitled to a bad day but it’s another thing entirely to allow yourself to be ruled by negative emotion.
“I’ve been through worse.”
If anyone ever tries to console you by saying that they’ve experienced something far worse than the pain and anguish you’re currently dealing with — you need to move on. The constant one-upmanship will get old very quickly.
“I’m not racist, but…”
If you have to preface your statement with “I’m not racist, but…” then odds are that you’re about to say something incredibly offensive and inappropriate. Do us all a favor and keep your small-minded comments to yourself.
“Stop being so sensitive.”
I’ll stop being sensitive when you stop being a self-righteous d-bag, does that sound fair to you? Maybe if you’d stop spewing such hurtful and insensitive comments, I wouldn’t be reacting in this manner — did you ever think of that?
