For some reason, what girls choose to wear to school is still something that is highly debated and inexplicably controversial. To me, the answer is simple— let kids wear what is comfortable and don’t teach boys to oversexualize girls from a young age. It’s easy!
However, it seems Christian musician and dad Matthew West missed the mark completely for many parents with his new music video.

Christian dad and musician Matthew West recently released a song celebrating modesty titled “Modest is Hottest.”
The song, directed at his two teenage daughters, is an attempt at humor that have left many parents with a bad taste in their mouths, and ears.
The lyrics for the video include:
“Now I have been trying hard to raise you up right/ No drinkin’, no smokin’, no swearin’/ But your old man has got a little more advice / When it comes to the clothes that your wearing… The latest fashion trend is a little more Amish/ A little less Kardashian. What the boys really love is a turtleneck and a sensible pair of slacks/ Honey, Modest Is Hottest/ Sincerely, your Dad.”
The song continued to threaten his daughters if he saw them dancing on the popular video sharing app TikTok.
“If I catching you doing dances on the TikTok, in a crop top, so help me God, you’ll be grounded ’til the world stops.”
As one can imagine, this video has sparked a fierce debate online.
While his Instagram page was filled with supportive comments including “Hahahaha so good!” and “Yes! TikTok better blow this up!” the YouTube comments were a different story.
“This modest is hottest ideal teaches women and ESPECIALLY young girls that their bodies are sexual and they are objects. And it also teaches that YOU have to dress for the men not yourself because you are nothing but a barbie to them. And the fact that it’s mostly men and fathers who tell this to their young daughters is disgusting,” wrote one viewer.
“the problem with this song is that it insinuates that women’s bodies are for men to look at,” echoed a different user.
“I can’t wait for your next video addressed to young men about how they can control themselves around young women, regardless of how they are dressed,” quipped a different viewer.
