It’s been a good two decades since The Princess Diaries and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came out. The film about Mia Thermopolis discovering she’s a princess to a faraway European kingdom made Anne Hathaway a star and introduced a generation to the great Julie Andrews.
But for most fans, those two films weren’t enough. All these years later, the outcry for a proper sequel to these movies is real.

But the question remains, could a sequel even be possible?
Well, there’s good news and bad news. I’ll start with the good news first: there’s a script for a third movie in existence! Anne Hathaway confirmed this in 2019 while sitting down with Andy Cohen.
To a rather excited crowd, she showed her interest in a possible sequel.
“I want to do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” Hathaway said in the segment.
“It’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.”
“It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it,” Hathaway said in the segment.
Which brings me to the bad news… that script is just that, a script.
At least for right now, it doesn’t seem like there are any plans to turn that script into the feature film of the decade.
But don’t worry, there’s still a lot of interest among cast and crew.
Julie Andrews, who played Clarisse Renaldi in the film, talked in 2020 about how, while she hasn’t received a script, she’d be open to the idea of returning to the role.
To Andrews, it might just come down to timing.
“I’m getting awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again. And yeah, sure, I would be up for it.”
Then earlier this month, Andrews opened up about feeling she may be too old for a sequel.
“I don’t know, I think I’m the one — [Hathaway]’s probably still okay for it, but I might just be a little too old a granny for it , I don’t know,” she said to ET. But fans would want nothing less!
Even Chris Pine would be open to returning for a sequel.
Pine, who played Hathaway’s love interest in the second film, said he’d be open to returning on one condition :
“If it’s in Los Angeles, I’ll be there… if it’s in L.A. It’s my hometown. I have a lot of pride.”
Even stars with minor roles would be open to coming back.
In 2017, Mandy Moore, who played a high school bully in the first film, said she was open to having a cameo in a possible third installment .
“Maybe I would make some quick cameo… If I’m going to be involved, I would be down for a cameo—maybe she could make amends with Mia and apologize for being a bully when she was younger.”
Of course, the film would have to pay tribute to the director of the first two.
The author of the books from which the films were adapted, Meg Cabot, was tight-lipped in 2017 about possible tributes to the films’ director, Garry Marshall, who passed in 2016.
In other words, anything is possible at this point.
I don’t know about you, but the idea of a Princess Diaries 3 has me feeling like a kid all over again. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if the project ever gets off the ground.
