Five years after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, Kaley Cuoco and Jim Parsons have recently reunited. Kaley shared a sweet photo of the two of them on her Instagram Stories. (Fans have noticed that he has a beard now.) She also encouraged fans to watch his Our Town performance on Broadway, saying it was “beyond!”
Jim and Kaley reunite five years after The Big Bang Theory finale
Kaley surprised Jim backstage at his Broadway show, Our Town, in New York City. She later posted their photo on Instagram with the caption, “I surprised him. Go see Jim Parsons in @ourtownbroadway! It is beyond!” and added a “Reunited” GIF. It was such a sweet moment, showing how close they’ve stayed even after the show ended half a decade ago.
The Big Bang Theory’s cast members reunite occasionally
Kaley and Jim haven’t shared the screen since The Big Bang Theory ended, though Kaley did have a voice cameo in the first season of Young Sheldon right after the show finished. Jim was the narrator on the show, voicing the older Sheldon Cooper.
Then, in the Young Sheldon finale this year, Jim made a special appearance as Sheldon in the present day, and Mayim Bialik returned as Amy. During that appearance, Sheldon mentioned Penny, saying, “I told you we never should have let Penny babysit,” when they talked about their daughter wanting to take acting classes.
The Big Bang Theory universe expands with new shows
Once Young Sheldon wrapped up, the franchise continued with the new show Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which premiered in October. We still don’t know whether any of The Big Bang Theory stars will make a special appearance, but since Sheldon is no longer the main focus, it doesn’t seem likely.
Could there be future on-screen reunions for Sheldon and Penny?
It’s still possible that Parsons and Cuoco could reunite on-screen as Sheldon and Penny someday. There’s a new spinoff series in the works for the streaming platform Max, which will be set in the comic bookstore that The Big Bang Theory characters frequented.
This development sets the stage for possible cameos by the original cast, so it’s exciting to imagine a reunion!
Jim Parsons casts doubt on returning to the Sheldon role
Parsons has already expressed some doubt about returning to his role as Sheldon after his appearance in the Young Sheldon finale. When asked about it on the red carpet at the Drama League Awards, he said, “Look, never say never to anything.” But he quickly added, “Life is long, God willing. But I don’t think so.”
Kaley Cuoco is interested in returning as Penny
Kaley, however, has made it pretty clear that she’d love to revisit her role as Penny. She told People, “I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career. I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to [creator] Chuck Lorre. It was some of the best years of my life, and some of the most fun I’ve ever had. I would absolutely reprise that role. 100%. I love that character, and I always will.”
A look back at the emotional end of the iconic CBS series
The end of The Big Bang Theory was an emotional moment for everyone. Parsons remembered Chuck Lorre saying, “watching these characters change will be like watching paint dry — you wouldn’t even notice it was happening.”
But as time went on, Parsons realized that wasn’t entirely true. He told THR in 2019, “We got to play long enough that they were allowed to change and you did notice it because at some point they were writing enough episodes, like, well we have to. They have to morph a little bit. And that made it really fun. I’m deeply satisfied with how it ended.”
Kaley’s thoughts on Penny’s development
“I was super happy,” Cuoco said. “I didn’t expect it at all because they’ve been playing against it for so long. I thought they did it so well and loved how it was a surprise and she was wrapping her brain around it. I think they’re going to be awesome parents. They waited so many years, and they’re so fun and easygoing. Or Penny is really kind of easygoing! I think they’d be adorable parents. I can only imagine…”
A nod to the brilliant writing of The Big Bang Theory’s finale
“When I originally read the script, at the Nobel ceremony — when everyone stands up — I was just so amazed by the brilliant writing. To give everyone their moment and to have Sheldon who, after all these years, can never apologize — actually apologize — to his friends is unbelievable. And to do it in front of people and to give of himself like that was unreal,” Cuoco added.
The beloved sitcom is now streaming on Max
For fans still craving more of The Big Bang Theory, the series is now streaming on Max, giving you a chance to relive the magic. With exciting reunions like Cuoco and Parsons’ recent catch-up, who knows what surprises await in the future?
