Qatar is hosting this year’s FIFA World Cup, and the country is known for restricting certain human rights, including freedom of sexuality. Upon welcoming foreigners into its nation, Qatar warned against contravening its laws, including bringing alcohol into the stadium and wearing signs of alliance with the LGBTQIA+ community. However, Alex Scott defied the rules.
The former Arsenal Lioness turned pundit wore a rainbow heart armband while covering the world cup live in the Qatari stadium four days ago. Her bold, defiant move has since gone viral across social media, from Twitter to Instagram and Facebook.
Taking A Stance
Scott’s outfit was simple – a printed two-toned blue two-piece leggings and top combo and her armband. The colorful heart stood against a white background with the words “One Love” circling it and the number one sitting between the rainbow stripes.
Her message was also clear – Spread Love and not Hate. Scott accessorized the look lightly with bold hoop earrings peeking out underneath her full, long curly black hair, and she topped the look with subtle n**e makeup.
Speaking Up For Equality

It’s no surprise that the pundit took a bold stance on the field, as she’s famous for speaking up and fighting for social justice, especially workplace equality. Being a woman in a male-dominated sport tells you the kind of person Scott is – someone bold enough to pursue her dreams.
During her career as a footballer, she commended every progress made towards promoting equality but clamored for more. Scott famously said we have a long way to go in all sectors, not just football.
Critics Fire At Scott Calling Her Performative
Several Qatari and Middle-Eastern citizens commented underneath her Instagram post, calling Scott a hypocrite for flouting the country’s rules. Even some of her countrymen against the LGBTQ community, such as Kelvin MacKenzie, a journalist, lashed out at her, saying she has double standards.
Some years ago, Scott traveled to Dubai for a fun vacation, and the country is also legally against bisexuality. So, Scott’s detractors believe her armband stunt was purely performative. The 38-year-old fired back, saying their comebacks were weak.
Scott Replies To Critics
The BBC Commentator reminded her critics that she still has all posts on her social media from Twitter to Instagram. If she were trying to hide her former actions, she’d have deleted or archived them to appear saintly, but she didn’t.
