Many parents are learning the hard way to watch what they share on social media.
Actress Naomi Watts is the latest celeb parent to learn this important lesson after sharing a controversial Instagram post on Mother’s Day.
Even though the post was meant as a joke, it quickly divided fans and Naomi received a slew of critical comments.
Take a look at why people were upset with her.
Naomi Watts is an Oscar-nominated actress based in Australia.
Even if you can’t quite place her name or face, you’ve probably seen some of her movies.
One of her most notable works was Peter Jackson’s remake of “King Kong”.

Naomi played the film’s empathetic heroine, Ann Darrow. She’s also starred in The Impossible and Mulholland Drive to name a few of her other films.
Naomi is also the mom of two children with her former partner, Liev Schreiber.
Naomi’s two sons are 10-year-old Alexander Pete and nine-year-old Samuel Kai. Naomi frequently shares pictures of the two boys on her Instagram account.
However, Naomi’s recent Mother’s Day post was met with intense backlash.

Naomi shared this photo of her sons with duct tape over their mouths. She captioned the photo, “Mother’s Day gift to myself … #seenandnotheard. Happy Mother’s Day.”
Many people thought the photo was going too far.
“Are you kidding??? I can’t consider this post hilarious so I’ll just unfollow!” said one commenter.
Another commenter thought the photo was insensitive to the parents of non-verbal children writing , “There are nonverbal children in this world, have you ever considered that some moms would do anything to hear their child’s voice?”
Due to the backlash, Naomi removed the photo and apologized.
Naomi said she, “didn’t mean to offend”.
“My humour is sometimes irreverent. Photo was staged obviously,” she said in an Instagram comment.
She replaced the photo with another one of her and her sons writing , “I’m so grateful to have these two wonderfully spirited people in my life. They are brilliant and unique, they keep me laughing and growing every day.”
Since the controversy, many of Naomi’s fans have come to her defence.

They thought Naomi’s original photo was funny and that her children didn’t seem too “traumatized” from her original photo.
People also praised Naomi’s parenting and sense of humor.

I can see why people were upset with the original photo, and maybe this issue is starting an important conversation about what is appropriate for parents to post on social media.
What do you think of the photo? Did Naomi go too far?
