What do you do before you pick a hotel?
Do you read online reviews? Or do you just trust your travel agent? And what about Airbnbs, huh? How can we really tell if the place is well-maintained? We’re kind of going on trust, no?
There’s some risk in that.
Online reviews can be deceiving, depending on how honest people are, indeed. And there are also paid influencers that can make the place appear more fabulous than it really is. All of that can be quite unnerving. And that’s why you need to do more digging.
But let’s say the place checks out, then what?
Is there anything you can do when you arrive to ensure it’s clean and free of stuff like bedbugs? Um, yes, there is. According to this hotel worker , this is what you should be checking for when you enter your hotel room.

So here’s the important part, you should be checking for bedbugs when it’s dark. Did you know that? I definitely did not. Why is that? Well, it’s because bedbugs are nocturnal. Aha! So, turn off the lights, close the drapes, so it’s pretty dark, get a flashlight and then go to town.
Now look in all crevices.
Take all the sheets off and check under the mattress. If the bed has a mattress cover, make sure you look in all the areas where bedbugs can hide. Yes, I know it’s a lot of work, but you have to do it.
You wouldn’t want any nasty bites, right?
One of the tell-tale signs of bedbugs is tiny blood specks. Oh, hell no! She said what? Yes, that’s right. If the bedbugs have bitten someone, there might be blood evidence left behind. Man, I didn’t want to hear that.

Also, it’s a good idea not to put your luggage on the bed.
So that way, if there were any bedbugs, they wouldn’t get inside your suitcases. You certainly wouldn’t want to travel with them, and God forbid, bring them home.
Oh, my goodness.
But what happens if you do see signs of bedbugs in your hotel room? Take pictures and document it all. Then get the heck out of there and present the evidence at the check-in desk. You will usually either get a refund or get relocated to a different room.
So can you still stay at the same hotel?
Well, just because you found bedbugs in one room doesn’t necessarily mean the whole hotel is infested. It could just have been one guest who brought them in with them. If the hotel can guarantee you won’t see them anywhere else, then you can still chance it. The choice is really up to you.
