One man’s viral tweet about millennials who don’t have children is earning quite a bit of backlash online.
Whether to have children or not have children is one of the biggest decisions a family can make — and that’s not even counting those who don’t get to make that decision at all because it’s taken out of their hands. One Twitter user shared that he felt the decision from a lot of millennials to not have children was going to be one they regretted , and quickly went viral from those arguing against him.
Twitter user @GShaneMorris tweeted out his thoughts on childless millennials.
“Millennials who are very cavalier about not having children are in for a shock when they enter their 40s & realize life is only half over. What do you do at that point? Keep trying to be sexy & have fun? I expect to see a lot of sadness & confusion about what to do at that point,” he tweeted.
He expanded on his point in a follow-up tweet.
“Without the natural connections and belonging that literally emerge from marriage and fertility, the latter years become very cold and lonely. Those “Friendsgivings” will get old, quickly,” he went on .
Almost immediately people began criticizing this opinion and take.
“I’m bored, and alas, I have no children to make life interesting” is not the dire warning you think it is. Fulfillment takes many forms. Reproduction is not necessarily among them,” tweeted one user.
Many pointed out the rising cost of childcare.
“Most Millenials aren’t having children because they want to be hot & party. We aren’t having children because we literally can not afford them nor do we have the time to raise them,” added another user.
More found flaws with his idea that children are born to entertain their parents.
“Children are not toys to entertain adults, nor a retirement plan. If you’re bored, get a hobby And it doesn’t matter how much you wish it, we’re not miserable, that’s just what you tell yourself,” tweeted one user.
