Most people sort of know what happens when a baby is born . We know that at some point, a woman’s water will break, that there will be contractions and pushing, and that the cervix dilates… whatever that means.
One pregnancy care center has gone viral with its cute and informative chart that perfectly explains cervix dilation. Take a look at this chart.
There are a lot of weird (but amazing) things that happen during labor.
A woman’s body does a lot of really cool things in order to get that baby out safely.
Even if you aren’t a parent, you know that something happens to the cervix during labor called “dilation”.

If you have no idea what this means, or how it happens, or even what a cervix is, don’t panic.
The cervix is like the door between the womb (where the baby lives and grows) and the birth canal.

During labor, the cervix will gradually expand to 10 centimeters. Once it reaches 10 centimeters, that means it’s time for mom to push.
One Facebook page decided to have some fun by illustrating the stages of dilation with Easter eggs.

I know it sounds weird, but Easter eggs are a traditional symbol of fertility, so actually, it makes sense. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to look at chocolate, right?
As you can see, the “eggstraodinary” cervix goes through a lot of changes during labor.

For some women, it can take hours and hours to dilate to 10 centimeters, but others get there relatively quickly (lucky mamas).
Let’s take a closer look at these measurements.
According to the chart, when a woman is one-centimeter dilated, her cervix’s opening is about the size of a mini Cadbury egg. Huh, go figure.
By the time she gets to 10 centimetres though, her cervix’s opening is the size of one of those big Cadbury eggs.
You know the ones in the purple foil? I guess that makes sense since the baby’s head has to fit through that opening.
Well, I think it’s safe to say that I’ll never look at Easter eggs the same way again.
What an informative and festive illustration. Who says you can’t learn anything from the internet?
