We are definitely living in interesting times – whether that’s a good thing or not, it’s hard to say. But things are seldom boring!
And yet, who else but a painfully bored person would come up with the idea to get as large a crowd together as possible in the Nevada desert to storm Area 51 and finally see if any aliens are in there?
But somebody did put that idea out into the world, and the response has been staggering.
The person behind the proposed raid on Area 51, a gaming streamer who goes by the handle SmyleeKun, just made a Facebook event and watched as hordes flocked – well, flocked as far as clicking on their intent to take part.
But there were a lot of people clicking.
So far, 1.3 million people say they’re going, with another million interested in going, and those numbers have been climbing steadily.
It’s obviously all in the name of fun and memes.
I mean, the details for the event are: “We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens.”
Does anybody out there really think Naruto running is a good way to avoid bullets? I sure hope not.
At the very least, you need to zig-zag, right?
Or, if we’re sticking to anime-inspired moves: why not go full Matrix?
Still, people are getting into the theme of it all.
One person even drew up a tactical assault plan, involving a frontal ground assault by “Kyles” hopped up on Monster energy drinks, rock throwers for primitive and inexpensive artillery, and those Naruto runners sweeping around the flanks.
It’s all delightfully silly.
Of course, the big question is, will anyone actually show up to the proposed raid?
Are people just clicking for the jokes, or are some of the tinfoil hat brigade actually planning to gather outside the most famous secret military installation in the world to storm the gates?
Who knows?
It has to be tough to get a million or more people to do anything, let alone show up to the desert on purpose. Even Burning Man doesn’t get more than about 70,000 people.
Which is not to say that the folks at the air base aren’t taking this all seriously.
That’s their job. Taking things seriously is really the whole point of having armed forces. And in a statement , U.S. Air Force spokesperson Laura McAndrews said that they were aware of the event and cautioned against taking part.
“[Area 51] is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” she said.
“The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”
So, if a few thousand people do actually want to raid Area 51 and see them aliens, will real, live bullets test the naruto runners?
Again, who knows? But if you want to see what happens to all the Kyles without traveling to the middle of nowhere, the folks at Area 15 have your back.
Area 15 is a planned “experiential retail and entertainment complex” in Las Vegas that doesn’t even open until 2020.
However, they’re inviting folks to come down to their site to catch all the action at a viewing party.
As WSBT reported, they’re asking people to come out in tinfoil hats and costumes to watch all the action go down in comfort as they live stream the event.
And really, it seems like a watch party is the way to go for the big day.
Mind you, knowing that you don’t have to leave your couch to see all the Naruto runners in action might cut into the attendance at Area 51 even further.
Anyway, it’s all supposed to go down September 20 at 3:00 am EDT, so maybe have some coffee with your popcorn if you’re going to tune in.
