The Piano Man singer has canceled all of his upcoming concerts after falling on stage in February and getting diagnosed with a brain condition.
He was advised to cancel the concerts
Billy Joel had quite a few concerts lined up for his fans across different cities until July but had to cancel them due to his health condition.
The press release announcing the news on Friday, May 23, said the artist was “advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period” by his doctor.
Joel was diagnosed with NPH
The 76-year-old performer was recently diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain ventricles.
His condition has been made worse by recent concert performances.
It was causing him problems with balance
As per the press release, recent performances while the singer was unwell have caused problems with his hearing, vision, and balance, prompting his doctor to strongly advise rest.
He thanked his fans for their support
The press release read, “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”
Joel said in a statement, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
Ticket refunds are being issued automatically
Joel’s team have also said that refunds for all the canceled tickets purchased will be issued automatically to the original form of payment used, and require no action from those who have bought them.
The singer has canceled his shows in New York City this summer as well as performances in New Orleans, Toronto, Santa Clara, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C. and Liverpool.
This comes after Joel fell on stage
News of the concert cancellation comes months after Joel fell on stage during a concert at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut in February.
A fan video from the concert shows Joel stumbling, falling backwards and landing on his side after spinning his microphone and tossing it. He seemed to recover from the fall moments later and carry on with the show.
Joel had postponed a few shows in March
The month after his fall, Joel’s team announced he would postpone his concerts through June, stating at the time that he was battling a “medical condition” that required him to “undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors.”
“Joel is expected to make a full recovery,” his team had said on March 11.
Joel spoke openly about it at the time
In an Instagram post at the time, Joel said, “While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first.”
“I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
