Okay, it’s not news that the dating world is a dumpster fire we all have to leap into at some point. But I’m not sure if it’s saddening or good to know that it’s that way the world over.
I mean, how bad does it have to be in Asia for a father to make a post on Facebook that basically offers up the keys to his kingdom to a man that will marry his daughter?

It sounds positively medieval, I know, but that’s exactly what one father in Thailand did all the same.
Anont Rotthong has been incredibly successful in the durian trade in Thailand.
Durians are famously foul-smelling fruit — so bad that an Australian university was evacuated after someone opened a particularly pungent durian — but Anont obviously knows how to move them, and he’s hoping his sales skills pay off when it comes to his daughter, too.
The Thai trader recently took to Facebook to offer up the keys to his kingdom for the man who can win his daughter’s heart.

According to the Bangkok Post , Rotthong is worried that his 26-year-old daughter, Kansita, is getting too old for marriage, and he’s looking to hand over the reins to his business to someone younger.
The incentives he’s offering are pretty lucrative, but he doesn’t want to give them to just anybody.

“Anyone who knows how to buy and select durian and source the fruit from orchards can take my daughter’s hand,” he wrote in his post, which he has since deleted .
And after reading the post— you can see why it was deleted, lol.

“I won’t ask for a single baht in dowry from him but will instead give him 10 million baht in cash, 10 vehicles, a house, two durian markets and a daughter who graduated with honours from Assumption University and had a master’s degree from Sun Yat-sen University in China.”
He has a few more stipulations for would-be suitors apart from their familiarity with durians, too.

“The man who will join my family must be good and must not be a gambler,” he said.
“Importantly, he must be hard-working and truly love my daughter.”
Seems like a reasonable ask when 10 million baht (about $310,000 U.S.), multiple vehicles, and two markets are at stake.
What does Kansita think about all this?

Apparently, she’s okay with it. “At first, I thought my dad was joking but it turns out he’s seriously looking for a son-in-law. My siblings and I respect his decision,” she said.
At least, that was before Anont’s post started drawing attention.
I can only imagine the type of guys who are trying to marry Rotthong’s daughter in exchange for riches.
Since then, the post seems to have caused a few rifts in the Rotthong family.

“My wife is very unhappy at the moment,” Anont told the South China Morning Post . “She said she doesn’t want her daughter to look like she’s unwanted.”
And, of course, potential suitors have come out of the woodwork.

With so much on the line, Anont is just trying to keep his energy up while sorting through the applicants.
“I have received thousands of telephone calls but when I eat durian in between, I don’t feel so tired.”

He has also emphasized that looks and education in a potential suitor does not matter.
Now that her father’s post is everywhere, Kansita isn’t so sure about the whole thing.

“I am starting to disagree with my father somewhat, because ultimately, it’s up to me to choose the man,” she said.
“He doesn’t have to be in the durian business like my father wants, but he must be a good man.”

She continued, “I always take my time in being with someone. In terms of wealth, for example, there should not be so much gap between us. But other than that, I have to see for myself.”
