People On Twitter Are Sharing 'Outrageous Things' White Privilege Has Let Them Do

Twitter user @Freeyourmindkid had a simple but powerful question for people, asking "White people — What is the most outrageous thing that you've gotten away with as a white person that you know damn well a black or brown person would have never gotten away with?" and encouraged folks to reply with the hashtag #MyWhitePrivilege.

Well, people sure thought their white privilege had let them do some crazy things.

This person admitted that they'd gotten away with "a LOT of shoplifting" when she was younger.

And she's pretty sure she was able to pull off her heists, as well as not facing any consequences, because of racism.

Moving to the front of the line without asking? Yep, that's privilege.

Because your time is so much more valuable than anybody else's, right?

This would have been a fail if it happened on a driving test, you have to think — and hope.

Because reversing down a highway exit is a great way to get people killed.

As one woman pointed out, it's easy to take simple things for granted.

Reminder: a hotel once called the cops on a paying black guest for calling his mother from the lobby.

Along with using hotel wifi, there's the simple matter of hitting up a hair salon.

No awkward conversations, no explanations, just a relaxing visit to the hair dresser.

Even a legit purchase can be troublesome.

You just know that setting off a security alarm is going to set off staff members.

How does this even happen?

I mean, isn't asking for license and registration a basic first step?

You'd think they might ask a question or two.

But no, apparently firefighters just cut the lock right off a bike when this woman told them she lost the key.

Honestly, I'm amazed this guy still has all his teeth.

Still, spitting on cops is definitely not recommended whether you have white privilege at your back or not.

Doctors don't have even remotely easy jobs, but easing pain is right up there in things they're supposed to do.

And it's not like they've never seen kidney stones before, so it's pretty outrageous that this guy wouldn't get help.

Wow, we share the streets with this guy?

It's truly upsetting that somebody could receive a slap on the wrist for such a serious offense.

This is horrifying.

I mean, it's not like police typically raid a house without a good reason and a warrant, but still, the injustice of the situation is palpable.

Unfortunately, this is the norm for many kids of color.

Often, kids feel pressure to buy something when they are casually shopping, just to prove that they aren't stealing.

The "skin color" talk is something white folks never have to give their children.

They don't because white skin is seen as the norm, and anything else is seen as "other."

This is a prime example of getting the benefit of the doubt as a white person.

POC trying to imagine themselves in this situation are probably shuddering.

The gun topic is a whole other issue.

While open-carry laws are supposed to allow for guns, non-whites often get penalized or even killed for having a weapon on them — especially when expired tags or paperwork is involved.

Destroying evidence in the name of white futures.

People talk a lot about dealing out the punishments people deserve when it comes to crimes committed. But does that apply to everyone equally? It doesn't seem so.

People have become apathetic to their oppression because it's constant and exhausting.

Plus, they know if they resist in the slightest it could end badly for them.

Even those protecting us and serving their country can't escape the inequality.

The treatment of black women is widely known, and yet still seeps into the fabrics of our military. Imagine risking your life for a country that still oppresses you? So sad.
