With fears of a recession looming over the horizon, many people out there are worried for their jobs and livelihoods. Just when you think you might be in a comfortable position in terms of employment, you might get a call, an email, or a meeting request that’ll change everything.
For one TikTok user, her employers laid her off, despite the fact that the tech company she used to work for was supposedly “recession proof.” She shares her story on the platform, which is a good reminder that no one is safe when threats of a recession are coming soon.
User Samantha Took to TikTok To Update Her Followers Last Week
In her TikTok, Samantha ( @samsramblings ) sits somberly in front of the camera before delivering the news. “Just finished a call I didn’t think I would be having,” Samantha says before stating that her employers at a tech company laid her off from her job as a Brand and Content Marketing Manager. According to Samantha, the company was supposed to have restructured to become “recession proof” before she’d even started working there.
She also explained that her direct report was going to be laid off, but she wasn’t allowed to give her any prior warning. “You feel awful as a middle manager, like not only is her job gone but my job is gone as well, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
And for this to happen right before the holidays seems especially awful.
Users Dropped Into the Comments To Wish Her Well

Many users complained that working for a tech company is especially difficult right now, citing the layoffs that have been happening in larger companies such as Meta .
Others simply dropped in to express their sympathies, as losing your job is an incredibly challenging ordeal to navigate.
Many Users Were Pretty Upset Over Sam Being Laid Off Right Before the Holidays

With Thanksgiving just a couple weeks away from the time Sam got laid off, not to mention Christmas, New Years, and other seasonal holidays are a month away, it’s a tough time for someone to lose their job.
For Many Commenters, This Story Was Evidence That “Recession Proof” Companies Don’t Truly Exist

Although Sam states that her company was meant to be “recession proof,” her position was cut regardless. It just goes to show you that any company can experience difficult times, and there are very few, if any, jobs that are truly “safe.”
